mig welding, small fast beads will not penetrate in thicker metal, i would use a weave bead. for 7018 you need a dc welder. for a ac mach. you can use 6011, you have to whip it in & out of the puddle. it will burn thru the slag. ... bobby

This is a great thread!! All I would like to add, stop by a shop that uses metal, ask for scraps, weld joints using learned techniques. Then break it or cut it. I like a 45 or 90 joint. It breaks easier cause one side is left unwelded. Look at your weld from the inside. You can see the penatration just how bad a cold start is etc. Pretty welding is not always the strongest. Again nice write up a good pointers!
