Anyone know of an early SM465 tranny for sale, one with a 10 spline output shaft?
I'm planning ahead as I'm not sure how long the one I have in the FJ40 will last (starting to have a few minor issues). They are much less expensive to replace than rebuild, unless someone is really good and wants to teach an old guy a new trick.

Tranny still making the funny noise huh?
Those were used in full size blazers and jimmys, should be easy to find.

Well, I'm going to drive it again next weekend (I hope) and see what happens. I have a bad seal somewhere on it also, as I'm loosing gear oil slowly. I figure if I'm pulling everything apart to fix that, then I might want to do something about my second gear syncro. I'm not able to shift from third to second unless I completely stop or feather the engine speed to sync up the tranny. That's not a big issue on the trail but on those few street ocassions, it's a pain.

Fran,
Rebuild kits aren't much more then $150, that aren't that hard to take apart, just time consuming.

I know where a 2wd one is, it could probably be had for cheap. Of course you'd need to swap out the output shafts.

Paul, you make everything sound easy,,,. I did see rebuild kits not being too expensive (about 150), but not sure I want to tackle the job not having seen it done. Don't some of the bearing need to be pressed?? I believe the one I have now is from a 2WD, the output shaft was replaced. Unfortunately, I had someone do it for me, and wasn't there to watch. Most folks believe it's easier and less expensive to just get another used tranny vs rebuilding. Thoughts??

These trannies are easy to work with. At least reassembly. I had a little problem removing one of the bearings during disassembly due to the tool isn't available anymore. If you do the rebuild make sure you get the three bushings that go on the main shaft. If your mainshaft is bad or you want a spare I have one with 10 spline output. I adapted an SM 465 into a CJ5. If you need access to a press your more than welcome to mine. Be sure you have a GOOD pair of snap ring pliers too.... Novak enterprises has the bushings for the main shaft which I am not sure if they are part of a regular rebuild kit or not......

Ok, Tim or Paul, if I go the rebuild route will you guys colaborate with me on the job. Not really wanting to jump into a tranny job without morale support. I want to have my tranny woes resolved by Big Dogs in April.

Paul / Tim,
Getting ready to order my master rebuild kit for the SM465. Tim, you mention making sure I have the right bushings that go on the main shaft. Here is what Novak says is in their kit.... "Our SM465 master rebuild kit, including all bearings, small parts, gaskets, seals, synchro rings, journal bushings and our in-depth instructional rebuild guide."
Drivetrain Specialists says this is in their kit.... "MRK Kit (RWD): Main case bearings, gaskets, seals, nuts, dogs & wires, thrust bearings, needle bearings, extension housing bushing, small parts kit, shifter bushings and other miscellaneous parts which vary by transmission."
Both sell their kits for $188. Any recommendations? Will this solve a known syncro promblem with second gear? I'm having to nearly complete stop when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd.
By the way, plan is to pull my drivelinethis Sat am. Would like to order a kit tomorrow, Friday. Fran

Quote Our SM465 master rebuild kit, including all bearings, small parts, gaskets, seals, synchro rings, journal bushings and our in-depth instructional rebuild guide Quote.
That sounds like the kit you should need. Novak Enterprises, when I orderd the adapter kit are the ones whom informed me that the mainshaft bushings (journal bushings) are important to replace during the overhaul. Just note that when in process of installing that you keep them straight as to where each one goes, they are different sizes and lengths. I would call them before ordering to make sure that they are included.

Ordered the rebuild kit today from Novak. They assured me their MRK will address all symptoms I'm having. I should expect it to arrive next week Monday. That means getting my tranny pulled this weekend.
By the way, forum moderators, would you either cancel or move this thread to the Projects / Builds forum. I'll continue posting there since I'm not buying anything.
Thanks, Fran
