Now I've got front & rear bumpers (very solid) , rockers/sliders (heavy duty), and a MASSIVE gas tank skid to install - I think I'll be adding almost 1000 lbs to the cherokee (that may be a slight exaggeration, but not as much as you'd think). I bet the gas tank skid is made of 10sq-ft of 3/16th plate. I'd better eat my Wheaties.
Does anyone have nice set of snap ring pliers I could borrow?

OK I'm a tard - what is the right way to remove the snap rings in the 231 that don't have the holes for the snap ring pliers? The one that you have to pinch the two ends toward each other was easy, but the two you have to open up are driving me nuts. Everything I can come up with seems brutal. I feel like the cave man mechanic. There has got to be a better way.
I put Ryan to work prepping the gas tank skid for paint.

Adam Hey Tard, I have a set of these snap ring pliers, and that snap ring comes out rather easily. If you don't have access to some of these, I've also removed them using (3) smaller flat-blade screwdrivers.

Josh and Candice (I hope I spelled that correctly) stopped by today and we got the transfercase back half swapped out without any real drama - the hardest part of the evolution was the disassembly of the donor case. Many thanks.
The chain in the Cherokee case is looser than I'd like it to be, but the donor case has a nice tight one I'll swap someday (on a bench with the right tools and someone smarter than me to help out).
I've got most of the prep work done for the armor and will be tackling that tomorrow. I hope I don't get a hernia or drop anything on my feet.

Hopefully, you don't regret not swapping the chains when you had it all apart, Adam. Looks like a lot of work going into this to have something to 'wheel while you're a gimp. Hopefully, you don't injure yourself further in the process! So, how much will you be selling it for when you're back to non-gimp status.... or are you keeping it? ;D

Today's progress - front bumper mounted (almost killed myself once), gas tank skid mounted (went on pretty easy), rear bumper will require modifications - the sides are too high to fit under the normal body seam where the Cherokee was trimmed and the mounts and rear crossmember will need to be clearanced significantly - the Cherokee they came from must have had extensive trimming at the back end - I've got a plan to make it all work though.
So the radiator should show up tomorrow, I need an exhaust, the rear bumper and sliders need to be mounted, and I should be good to go. TUE and WED evenings are my 2 free evenings to get everything done. I may be wrenching at Gore ...

I thought the gas tank skid mounted to the bottom of the bumper?

Hmm. Seems like every CJ/YJ/TJ skid I have ever seen does. Not sure about XJs.... only one I've seen and didn't look close enough was Dave P's (now Chris B's). I would definitely modify the bumper vice hacking more metal off the XJ, though. If someone can haul it for you, I know of a couple of decent exhaust shops in Hampton Roads - Big Al's and The Muffler Shop in VB. Can't speak too highly of Big Al's (they wouldn't do what I wanted done), but The Muffler Shop does good work and will do what you ask if you want something that isn't necessarily stock (i.e. if it exits at the side and you want it at the rear and/or want a larger, free-flowing exhaust, they'll hook it up). Keith probably knows someone more local to you that does good work, though. I'm sure you'll be glad to get it going and 'wheel it at Gore.... hope it gets done in time Dave G

I thought the gas tank skid mounted to the bottom of the bumper? Not sure about the Cherokees, but I thought it mounted to the rear crossmember like they do on CJs and Wranglers, you know the real Jeeps.

I guess I wasn't looking at CJs/YJs/TJs as closely as I thought... thanks for the correction, Keith Dave G
