Your transmission and tire size will determine your axle ratio. 4.88 for a standard transmission and if I read correctly a 4.56 for auto. That's to get back into a factory setup. Paul G. Paul, I have always seen lower factory gear ratios for autos, especially on tow package options. For instance, my '87 with no factory or dealer tow package and 5-speed manual has 3.45 gears. The '89 with automatic and (I'm assuming here, don't have original paperwork to verify) tow package has 3.73 gears. I've also seen bone stockers with no fluff where the slush-box equipped vehicles had the lower gears because of the inherent slippage and final transmission drive ratio differences - the 5-speeds generally run 0.79ish:1 and auto overdrives 0.75ish:1. Both of mine run roughly the same RPMs in overdrive @ 55mph - actually, the '89 runs at lower RPMs. I'm still wondering if there was a gear swap done on the '87 at one time or another, but the tags say it's got 3.45 gears. Sorry for the tangent.... Dave G

I am installing an engine for Matt, but I have found that the transmission input shaft has a lot of play up and down. I am thinking the main input shaft bearing might be the issue. Have yet to open it up to see the extent of the damage. any pointers.

Since the tranny made noise Might be the source of the problem.
What transmission is it?

Not sure, what would be identifiable castings?

If there is too much play than there should be metal in the fluid.
