Just thought that I would pass this along. I have a Cobra 75 WX cb for the TJ since I can lock up the mic/controller portion of it and the rest of it is hidden. Well in the 97 TJ there is no aux power line behind the glove box like later models. I wanted to wire it directly to the battery but was worried about battery drain so I emailed Cobra to find out whether the box was powered when the mic was disconnected. Here is the response- The junction box is not powered when the handset is disconnected. There should be no battery drain.
So that is my plan now to wire it directly to the battery, just thought that I would pass along the info.

Thanks Jonathan... good to know. My 98 does have the "unswitched" aux connection behind the glove box and that's where I have mine connected. I did kind of wonder about that, but it's not been a problem in over a year so I guessed it was ok. For what it's worth, the C75WXST is pretty low drain, even when on. I leave it on for long periods, hours at a time (when out of the Jeep, but wanting to hear what's going on), and there has never been a challenge with battery drain.
On a side note, I just got a second junction box for Nena's Grand so I can move it there when needed. She's not real enthusiastic about me drilling holes in the body for the antenna mount, so I'm going with a "no ground plane" Firestik to mount on the roof rack. (She wouldn't even let me get a red one... so it's boring black) :-(

Should have bought a white one with a red tip. That's how Ben has recognised my TJ in the past.
Well I knew for short periods of time, the drain shouldn't be a problem but there have been times that the TJ will sit for a week or more and I don't drive it. That was really where my concern came from. The 97 unfortunately didn't have the aux wires that your 98 and on up have.
Good luck drilling holes in the Grand. You might want to get Nena's approval before that bit starts spinning.

Hey Jonathan, if you don't want to drive your TJ for a week, I will!

But I did have to get the spring for the 2-3 ft antenna vs the 4-5ft spring because it was flexing the fender alot.

Hey Jonathan, if you don't want to drive your TJ for a week, I will! Well, it usually taken apart when I sits for a week. But then again if you are willing to put gas in it, I might think about it.

why not just hook it up to a switched power source with the key, that way it wont drain your battery if accidently left on.

I was thinking of doing that. Right now I use the power port with a cigarette type plug. I had also thought of wiring through a switch but for now the plug works.

I wired my Cobra 29 straight from the battery with a relay in series hooked to the trucks radio power (Acc and run positions). This gives "clean" power for the CB, helping to reduce the background noise, but cuts the radio off with the key. It works great ;D! At Shoe Creek this past weekend the squelch could be turned almost entirely down, no whine or pop from the motor electrics at all.

Right now I don't get any engine noise with it plugged into the power port but my 2meter ht will pick up engine noise and it has nothing powered by the Jeep.

You can drop the power line though it, and then run it to the battery. I have been running it off the battery for the last 2 years in the Rubi and 3 years in my '01 TJ. No issues with it, and I have been know to leave it on a few times over night before.

I ran my power to a hot point on the fuse box. Haven't left it on overnight so I couldn't comment about drain. I do like that you can get a seperate base for another vehicle. Gotta hook up the personnel carrier now.
