This past weekend's visit to Paragon and Rausch Creek provided me with a new upgrade "opportunity". After our second day of wheeling on the rocks, Tony noticed my tie rod was slightly tweaked. While it was still in one piece, I figured this would be a good time to replace it with something stronger and keep the old one as a trail spare. I found a tip on Stu Olsen's web site about using a '98 Grand Cherokee V8 tie rod on the TJ, so off to Napa I went. Rather than going into the details here, I'll refer you to Stu's web site: www.stu-offroad.com/steering/zjtie/tierod-1.htmAs you can see in this photo, the ZJ tie rod (left) is much beefier than the stock TJ tie rod. Installing the new tie rod was straightforward, just two studs, and the parts from Napa came with all the associated hardware (castle nuts, cotter pins, zirk fittings, and grease boots). And, it just LOOKS stronger once mounted: The only thing left at that point is alignment, by my favorite mechanic ;D If you decide to go this route, the part #'s from Napa are: 269-6085 $77.49 269-1134 $24.99 269-2788 $41.99 I would also suggest that you go to www.napaonline.com and look up these items and add them to your shopping list, and print that to take to your local Napa store. The prices at the store were a bit higher, but they matched the price shown online. Lyle

Actually, he borrowed that one from his boss. That thing was cool... digital readout and it beeps and the handle vibrates when you approach the selected torque setting!

Cool upgrade. Hey, is your motor leaking oil behind the dampener there? It looks kinda dark on the dirt there....or maybe it is just the way the pic is.

How much was the ZJ tie rod and where did you get it? Now that I have made a friend at the dealership parts counter, it might be a good time to buy.

Ok, will look again. I did go to the Napa site but my comprehension of the English language isn't too good today. One note, I found that in order to get the part number to appear on the Napa site, I had to get rid of the dash. Stupid web site.

Lyle, just out o curiosity...why didn't you go with an even beefier set up...just thinking for maybe a hundred more bonez you could get a way more rock-proof tie rod assy. and set up. And maybe a good reason to look at the hi-clearance setup too. The kit from poison spider is only like $259 or just upgrade the tie rod and ends from rockstomper. -Ken

Hi Ken,
Sorry I'm so late seeing your note. Three reasons that I went this way: 1. The 100 more bucks (I was looking for cheap at the time). 2. This upgrade has the advantage of being all standard parts. If I manage to bend or break this one, I can pick up replacement parts at any Napa store, or Jeep parts dept. 3. The original tie rod, while a little tweaked can serve as a trail spare and will bolt up if needed. I've got it zip tied under the grill support struts at the firewall... out of the way, but there if I need it. Since it's just the way I took it off, no adjustments necessary to get me home.

I bent my tie rod once. It took me a crowbar and a TLAR system (That Looks About Right) reverse to get it back right.
