Just some possibly useful information. Last saturday my Jeep failed inspection for no third brake light. I had the mechanic look in is rule book and found that all 94 and newer sport utility vehicles and trucks less then 10000lbs are required to have this light and to have it in working condition. An easy fix. Up at Harbor Freight they have third brake lights that you can wire in yourself. I mounted mine on the horizontal bar on my swing out tire rack and connected it in the factory location inside the Jeep. All together it cost me less then $10 for the fix. $2.50 for the light and $5.50 for the conduit to cover the wire. Inspection passes now and it still looks stock.

Yeah, I got hit on that too. But I moved away so now I don't have to deal with state inspections. I have a 3rd brake light (TJ) if anyone wants it.

I got my factory one at the house but I couldn't figure out how to make it fit and still look respectable. IE not make it look like joe bob broke out the duct tape and bailing wire.

ZIP ties Why wont it work? rim have too much backspacing, seen rims with 4.75 backspacing and 33x12.5 use stock mounts......

Yeah I got hit for not having one either on the TJ couple years back. It is def required on TJ's to pass inspection. Pretty easy to make a simple mount for it on aftermarket swing arms. Or keep the stock spare tire mount and just make spacers with longer bolts to accommodate a larger tire. Thats what i ended up doing on the rubi...Have a 34" Swamper LTB on the stock tire carrier now with no problems.

Well I havnt had my 3rd light on my TJ for two years, and obviously gone through two inspections without a problem. But then I am "in good" with the mechanic that does them. That always helps...
Some of you might know the jeep I am talking about, Its a light ocean blue and I think it was the Jeeperman Jeep. Well I was behind him down on atlantic the day I went to Camp Jeep, and He had mounted a little LED (probably about an inch , maybe inch and a half across) right smack dab in the middle of the rim on the spare. Good Idea i think, out of the way, and still very visable.
Ill see if i cant locate a picture of what im talking about.

if you read the VA inspection manual it actually lists the DOT or whatever #s the light has to meet for it to be legal (those numbers on the lens) tho I'm pretty sure if you have any type of light it would pass in prob 90% of the shops that do inspections

the mechanic that did the inspection said as long as it was a red light above the centerline for the two tail lights it would be good. He didn't specify how far above the centerline either... Center line being horizontal. as far as using the factory light I couldn't think of a way to make it work based on my aftermarket tire carrier without spending alot more on metal then the light I got.

i put some 1" spacers at the mount, added some wires. then all it needed was a lil' manipulation centering. after it was done i had no problem clearing the 33" mtr's. no duct tape needed..
