May be old hat to some, but I bet there is a bunch of folks who havn't even considered it. Today was the install for the new rockcrusher diff covers, while I was at it, I added a lil clearance under the axles. We all know that every lil bit of clearance under the axles counts, thats why we spend so d**n much on lifts to fit bigger tires. Remember that every bit of clearance is doubled at the tires, ie, 1/2" at the axle is equal to 1" larger tire size, 1" at the axle is equal to 2" of tire size. How in the heck did I get larger tires with a grinder? Easy, by shaving the diffs a bit to match the new covers. Here's the front after a bit of massaging with the trusty grinder, notice how close to the edge of the cover the bottom right bolt is compared to the top right, thats how much I took off it. The back before I messed with it. In this one you can sorta see the lip between the diff and the cover. Cover overlapped the diff in this spot by about 1/4". Hows my pedicure holding up? On the drivers side, the diff overhung the cover by about 1/4". Here's the same spot after a lil grinder magic. Overall, I gained about 1/4" of clearance by grinding, since tires usually run small, its almost the same as going from 31's to 32's for a grand total of $0 spent. I also took the time to smooth out all the sharp edges on the bottom of the diffs, less to hang up on.
