This is a (slightly edited) copy-and-repost of a response I made to a "wanted" section post for steel in small quantity. Fran pointed out we might want to stick this somewhere it won't get lost so quickly.
These are local suppliers I've used -- please add any good suppliers you like, including both new and scrap. ;D

BMG Metals in Chesapeake is great, I've dealt with them, and they have an excellent selection of structurals, tube, sheet, aluminum, you name it. Richman Steel in Newport News on J Clyde is OK too, though they don't have nearly the selection. Problem is, at BMG or Richman you're going to have to buy an entire stick (20'), though they'd probably cut it in half for you for free so you could get it in a "normal people" truck.
For new A500B tubing by the foot (tubing the original poster described needing), go to JR Enterprises (also listed as Sims Metal) at 4300 Buell St. in Chesapeake (click for map). Go through the main gate, straight ahead past the scale, and there's a building on the left that's their "retail sales" area. Material is stored outside under cover, so it's not quite as clean as it would be from BMG, but they'll torch to length and sell to you by the foot in whatever quantity you need. They do have angle and other small structurals, too, and I've never really had time to browse everything they've got.
Note: map shows these guys to be right at the south-to-east 90* bend in the road, but they're not. You need to go around this turn to the east, and go all the way to the end until you can't go any farther -- then hang a left into their gate. That jog to the north the map shows as the end of that road is actually their parking area.
Another good source I've used for a lot of the steel on my truck is Old Dominion Recycling, 1618 W Pembroke, in Hampton (map). They're a scrap recycler, but sometimes have a lot of good, useable material in their "retail" section immediately on the right when you come through the gate. You'll pay around $0.30 a pound for "used" steel at Dominion vs. $0.80 a pound for the same steel "new" at Sims or BMG. Aluminum scrap retails at a buck a pound.
