I sure wish I had some good practices to offer here. This is more along the lines of "please help!" I scored one of the Smittybilt XRC8 winches and even a winch novice like me know a $300.00 winch needs a little attention if you want it to last.
Any ideas on what or how to make this winch (or any winch for that matter) weatherproof? Grease suggestions for the drum and gears?
Thanks, Andy

Put a cover over it, don't submerge it, and run the line in and out once a month to keep the brushes inside clean.

hey Andy did you get it mounted yet?I have spent the last 2 days working on my bumper. I cut the brackets off and moved the bumper back about 2.5 inches and down about 2 inches. I also notched my bumper to lower the winch in the bumper about 2 inches and then plated the notch with 1/2" steel and made a plate for the front to mount the fairlead to. I just took all the paint off and when ever I get a chance I am gonna get some paint and spray it. and then I should be able to mount the bumper and winch and then wire up the winch.

Haven't mounted the winch just yet. I'm still working out a $300.00 winch issue with Smittybilt (busted motor end cover). The busted cover is what promted me to take this thing apart and I noticed that it wasn't put together very well or greased up very well. The hardware holding it together seems like it'll be ok as long as some loctight is applied and the gears need some more grease (what kind???) before I close it up for good. I'm also looking at sealing the seams (but with what???).
So far as getting it mounted I've already got a winchplate that should work I hope, the bolt pattern is standard. The best I can do is 3/16 inch steel on my plate but it's design looks pretty strong (Warn plate). You're going to have to post some pictures of your bumper/plate so everyone can salivate over the power of the welder.

well I got it mounted and wired up but I am gonna move the solenoid box under the hood so it is out of the weather cause it is not very weather tight. I already have the cable to do it just need to get some ring terminals. I also need to get a cover made cause the warn cover I bout doesn't fit right cause of the plate I made. and I need a winch save donut thing

Well, looks like I might end up with two winches! Smittybilt (aka: 4wheelparts) is sending me another XRC8 stating that the one I have must have been damaged in shipping. OK... sure... whatever. Depending on how the UPS investigation goes I might start mounting and wiring things in the next couple days. or I may end up having to wait another week or so for the other winch to show.
The plan is to mount the solenoid under the hood same same and figure out a winch cover. If the weather holds and I have the time I'm going to see what I can do about getting a switch mounted in the cab. And I'm planning on installing the remote jack somewhere easy to get to (maybe the fender).
Bryan: How are you planning on making the winch cover? Something solid or more along the lines of neoprene?

I think I am gonna talk to Sandy she told me of a guy that does some good work or I might just keep this one it looks ok the plate on the front looks alittle big but it will protect the winch

You know Bryan... that is a pretty sillyed sharp setup. With the control box under the hood your winch will be well protected and it looks awesome. On the matter of a cover I'm going to have to figure something out. I wish I hadn't thrown away my old warn out soft top. I'll toss around a few ideas before I defer to a master.

Byran, As Pirate would say needs more triangulation. Looks good but, does the front fairlead mount go to the bottom or is it welded along the top only? Oh yeah were are the tow hooks you may not think you need them but, you will. Tony

I have a tow hook on the passenger side of my frame. I still have some more stuff to do to it I just wanted the winch to be mounted.
