ok its josh. well i found out why i have a funny leen to the pasenger side. my frame rail problem has rusted away. lol. although not funny because although i can weld i have no welder and no place to weld it. I am really hopping somebody can help me because the leaf spring shackle on that side is preety much sitting on the top of the frame rail. i know how i want it done and will take the jeep to where ever you want to fix it ie: somebodys house of garage since i can not do it at the hobby shop. I will take the bumper and gas tank ooff and then cut out the old section and then we can weld the new section. I will also do what ever else but i really cant take it four wheeling anymore or drive it untill its fixed. so i hope i will get some help thank everybody

Why don't you post some pics of the damaged area so we can see what kind of work will be involved in repairing this. How's the other side, how's the rest of the frame? If it's gone, you might just want to do a new frame. Do you have the square tubing and some plates that you'll need to do this? If it's just the bottom of the frame that's rusted but the sides and top are good you might be able to get away with sleeving it or some C-channel. I'm assuming this is the rear shackle mount area?

I wonder how Ben can work this into his "It's only Oak Ridge" t-shirt? Like Keith said, let's see some pictures, and tell us about your planned fix. We can all be armchair welders for a change.

well i dont have a digital cammera so no pics but i can tell you that the rust is on the bottom and sides preaty bad. There really isnt anything left on the bottom so its gonna be fun. I can also tell you that i took to eastern truck and accessorys and got a quote for $427.00. I dont think that is a bad price so i have a drop off date set up and will probably just take it treir and let them do the work. All taht i will have to do is pull out the gas tank because i have had a lot of problems in the past with it and want to be shure it goes in and comes out by me so its the way i want it. It also keeps the price down below $500. Anyways if anybods has a better idea let me know before 2MAY09. Thats the drop off date.

Like mentioned above you're probably better off going with another frame... You can normally get a frame for cheaper than $500... You just have to look a round... I imagine that the surrounding metal is thin... and I know there are a few people on here that have a few Jeeps collecting rain and rusting away in their backyard... It's just a matter of contacting them and convincing them to let one go, lol. Woodfins in Richmond had a lot of Jeep parts, bodies, frames just waiting for a new home....

Josh, it's your Jeep and your decision. I've been through this with the CJ. I've seen people cut the rear frame rails off and weld new stuff on, and I tried it. When the cancer gets that bad, it's probably worse than you think all over the frame. What will you weld too? More rust? I ended up putting on a new frame eventually.
Maybe ETA can get it right, but I'd take that $500 and find a good, solid frame like Rich said, POR it, make some friends, and do the swap.

Rich and Keith are right, another frame is the best way to go. However looking at it from a different perspective... I don't know what it looks like, but I can't imagine it can't be patched for a couple of years. My 1981 frame started rusting out badly around 2 spring hangers and motor mount in 1988. I had it patched by friends and 1 spot I took to a welding shop and for $50.00 they put a very nice 1/4" plate patch on. I did this all as a temporary fix until I could get another frame. I would not take it to a 4x4 shop, I would take it to a small welding/fab shop. I don't know if Fitzgerald's welding is still in business on bainbridge blvd in Chesapeake, but he (Andy)used to do a lot for me. BTW, I never got another frame, still running the patches. .02

Or contact Paul Cleary for a price on getting the frame repair done if you can't find a frame quickly.

Sounds similar to my YJ frame delima I had. I had some rot at the driver spring hanger behind the axle. I had help from Paul P. and we cut the frame and patched it, and rewelded the hanger back on.
Ill see what I can do on the design, maybe the whole logo riding on a cracked frame, that ones for you Josh.

If you can't find any help in retrieving the frame you can always rent a U-haul for $29.00 and toss it in the back and a couple ratchet straps later you're golden... Woodfins will also help you load it... Rich

I think he just bought a 1/2 ton truck, so he should be good to go. Josh, 2 people can load a frame in a truck easy. I'm sure they'd help.
