I have come across a FREE 94 wrangler, no engine (was the 4 cylinder) w/ 5 speed. All running gear and body in good shape. I thought that this would make a good project. I was thinking of using one of the 4 liters I have. I know that I will have to swap out the wiring harness, PCM, and have the motor mounts moved but my question is can I use the current tranny, just change the bell housing to mate to the 4.0 or will I be better off pulling one from the bone yard. The 4.0 I believe is out of a 99 model XJ. I would like to eventually have this setting on at least 33's. Any pointers or suggestions are always welcome.

I believe the tranny bolt patterns are different betwen the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder. How about sticking an NP 435 in there and get a low first gear for wheeling?

Is that a readily available tranny, what year would I expect to find it in? I definatly want to install components that will hold up to wheeling, but also be able to use as a DD on occasion.

With that said, I am however on a tight budget, so I am trying to pull from parts I have here, or can find at a good $$$. I will most likely go with aussie locker (front), I think this model came with the 4.10 gears, and the np231 t-case.

I forget which years the NP435s were in, but if you can find a newer junked F-series with a ZF transmission in it, that would help on the daily driving as you'll have overdrive - but I don't think the bellhousing comes off, so you'd probably end up having to use an adapter or engine that will bolt up . I think the Novak site as the info you're looking for for the NP435 transmission, what trucks and years it came in as well as what is available to bolt it up to whatever engine and t-case: www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np435.htmDave G

I'd look at finding a donor XJ/MJ for the entire drive train, stronger axles, etc. You can find them in pretty decent shape for really cheep - this will give you a complete wiring harness, all the little pieces, and commonality through out. The auto (AW4 if I remember right) is a nice tranny and with a shorty slip yoke eliminator and some planning will fit nicely.
If the XJ idea doesn't float your boat, I'd still recommend finding a single donor vehicle that has all/most of the components you'd like to use (1/2ton ford, explorer, fullsize Jeep, whatever).
Just one opinion ...

So I can use the AW4 auto out of the XJ. I thought that it was too long, so if I mount the engine as forward as possible then it will work? I HAVE 2 AW4's, one is a 90 the other is an 99. These are already mated to 4.0's and t-cases. If any one has used the AW4 in a wrangler, could you give me measurements for the motor mounts locations.

With good planning, a short slip yoke eliminator, and not too much lift, it can be done (extending the wheelbase helps too and isn't hard).

I would like to see this project happen. I will be doing the same someday.

Once I get it home and really assess what I will need I will begin. I am thinking of using the 90 4.0 due to I already have the complete harness and PCM! A major hurdle cleared! It will be out of an XJ, but I think it will work, still not sure about using the AW-4 or getting a 5 speed tranny. Just have to find someone that can weld to get the engine setting right, the rest is "cake".

HOLY *(&^*&^, I am almost certian that I have that tranny in the back, it came out of a 71' F-100 4x4, it still has the "simple" t-case (2 or 4wd). It was mated to a 360(still have it too along with the D-shafts) Now there is a reason for hanging on to stuff!!!

The NP435, or is it a T18/19? I believe you can get the bellhousing to mate it up to your 4.0 @ Novak. You can also get the adapter for a 231 T-case, or keep what's bolted to it.

Now all I have to do is get the thing here, oh and finish the barn. Darn legalities with the local county officials over a permit! Anyhow, I have started taking stock of what I have here that will possibly work as drive train, will need a couple things but looks as if i have all the major items, now its just how to make it all work. I think its name will be FRANKENSTEIN!!
