Anybody here tow one of the Pop Ups you can rent from MWR? I'm considering this for the Annual and was wondering if I could tow one with my TJ all the way to OR.
Thanks, Donny

Thanks, Donny Tony Wheeler has done it several times with his YJ. You might just want to turn off that fancy new overdrive that you'll have. What gears do you have? Why can't Jen just follow you in the Denali, with the camper in tow?

Trying to save the gas of driving 2 vehicles to Oak Ridge. I'm running 3.73 gears and 35" tires. Definately geared for the autobahn right now.
I've got a set of 4.11's for the front, but need to find them for the rear. Also I think I need a different carrier for the rear.
Also looking at maybe swaping for a set of 33's.

Donny What rear axle do you have? If you have a rear D44, you could score the stock Rubi 4.10's pretty cheap and you won't need a new carrier because they're a "thick" gear set. Let me know what you might need, I've got to get rid of some things anyways. Moving sucks!

I've towed my popup a few times with the TJ. Keep the pup weight to as close to 2000# as you can or less. Like Chris said, don't be in a hurry and it's not too bad, i.e. don't try to keep with Craig or convoy with him. I thought I could hang one time and I said we're getting in the left lane and put the hammer down, running about 70 in the rain. About 10 minutes later he gets on the CB and says, "I thought somebody said we going to put the hammer down?" Without gears you won't want to use OD. Donny what axles are you running front and rear with 3.73 gears that you'll be going with 4.11s later?

My parents used to tow a camper with us kids and enough gear for week every year. We had 2 campers over the years. One was an old Cox popup that they used to haul behind a tempo/topaz. they also had a Jayco hard top pop up. That one was pulled behind a Tempo/Topaz and eventually a Suzuki Sidekick JX. If these can pull a camper you shouldn't have too much of a problem with your TJ. Just keep it slow and don't expect to keep interstate speeds going through the mountains. Use engine braking as well on the downhill parts to help the brakes.

I think I'm not a good comparison, the chalet is at 1000 lb wet. So its not bad weight wise I just need better gears on the hills for the 37s.

If I can use my same bearings over and just re-shim them, I might be able to swing that.

Thanks for all the good comments. I figured the TJ would pull it just thinking about stopping with Jen and 2 of the 3 kids in the car.

To be honest I think it's a waste of time to regear from 3.73 to 4.11, even if the 4.11s were free. That's a whole lot of work, gear oil, and bearings for very little change.
