It was all custom made by my brother. There is no factory skid on an Xj at least no more tha n a piece of tin covering the plastic tank. I thought the back part of it hooked to the bottom of the huge bumper. Cause i remember when he dropped a socket between the bumper and hatch and had to take the skid off to get it.

This gas tank skid and bumper are designed to mount to each other. Once I get it all together it's gonna be plenty sturdy.
The Cherokee they came off of must have been trimmed higher than the body seam on the rear quarter panels and must have had a bunch of the rear cross member trimmed off as well. I have some clearance work to do, but I think I've got it all figured out.
I got my cast off today. My calf looks like an old lady's upper arm - all loose and floppy. Now I get to work on slowly increasing my flexibility and then move to weight bearing.

The UPS guy brought me a nice radiator - now lets see if I can get it in before Gore or if I'll have a ready spare ...

I forget the year split(s), but some things for some models will not fit other models. I think the only thing that didn't change much over the years on the XJ is the suspension as best I could ever tell. But, at least you have a plan to make it all work and hope it comes together in time! I got my cast off today. My calf looks like an old lady's upper arm - all loose and floppy. Now I get to work on slowly increasing my flexibility and then move to weight bearing. Good news. Hope your physical therapy goes well, brother. Dave G

Update #237 - after work today I finally got ATF in the transfer-case (I need a bigger hex key) and it doesn't leak a drop and I've got all the gears, so I'm calling it good (thanks again Josh and Candice). Then I mounted the passenger slider - it's a good thing I don't get paid based on the work I actually get done in a given time - I'd be dirt poor. It took me almost two hours and everything went smoothly. Then I threw it on the trailer and dropped it off to have the exhaust done tomorrow.
My leave was approved and I even got Thurs off so I can finish everything (my fingers are crossed and I've knocked on wood).

Not to mention Keith said he would help. Who is doing the exhaust?
Oh and Dave they are off the same year. Llike i siad my borhter got rid off all the extra metal and bolted everything directly through the wanna be frame. I believe he made the bumper to attach like something with a normal frame vice the rear cross member.

Adam - sounds like it's all coming together pretty nicely (lol @ 'Update #237'). I'm with Tony, who's doing your exhaust? Not that it matters per se, but any options for when I need something done and it being while I'm in Hampton Roads visiting Gotcha, Tony. I'm sure there are slight differences between the different 'models' of XJs, though - at least that is my casual uneducated observation . Maybe only slight, but enough to make things not play so nicely at times. Dave G

Not to mention Keith said he would help. Who is doing the exhaust? I think he's going to take it to Weaver's down in Holland. I said I'd help but I felt terrible today. I started mids and I think it's worn me down, I'm getting older and this hurts; so anyway I'm coming down with something and it's getting worse. I think I'll go home early tonight and try to get over and help him Wed night.

Hope you get well soon, Keith. I can relate to getting older.... and uh, 'down in Holland'? On Dutch Rd in Suffolk, I'm guessing ;D Too funny.

Based on Fromme's recommendation I took it to Weaver's in Suffolk.
Fromme - get better. I'll supply the herbal tea, chicken noodle soup, ginseng, and red bull if you wanna come over and tell me what I'm doing wrong.
The foot seems to be adjusting to the new position / boot, so I'm hoping it continues to improve.

Glad to hear your healing process is going well so far, Adam. Thumbs up or down on Weaver's? If that's Keith's 'exhaust guy', then I'm probably already sold on them - they did pretty good work on his CJ from what I recall. And again, hope you get well soon, too, Keith. Being sick or otherwise not 100% sucks.

Just got back from Adam's. He's ready to go. He's got some cleaning up to do and packing and load it up, but I still feel like crud and had to leave. I'm going to bed, you all have fun this weekend. Oh, and Tony you might have a fight on your hands when Adam is done with it..... My fingerprints are on it now and I kind of like it. hahahahahaha

With significant help from Fromme I think the Cherokee is ready for it's maiden voyage. I've got bumpers/sliders/gas tank skids for nearly all around protection, the exhaust is complete, the new radiator is installed and isn't leaking, the transfer case isn't leaking ...
I'll be bringing tools and fluids, but I think the only thing left to do before I hit the trails is figure out how to secure the sway bar when disconnected and see if 'wee little wheeler' is scrawny and long enough to get a couple of bumper mounting bolts started that I can't reach.
Shoot I'm even working on standing on two feet and slowly limping around with out crutches.
I'm all kinds of excited for this weekend's adventure.
Adam
