Oh one other point, If you get the TPS I would highly recommend getting it from the dealer, aftermarket electronics have been known to be a bit unreliable when it comes to items like this. ALso double check your cables for proper adjustment, your TV cable is easy to adjust, engine off, key off. Push the plunger down and slide the inner cable sheath back till it stops inside the main cable. Then operate the throttle to WOT, you should hear a couple clicks, this is the cable adjusting itself out. Your done after that. Ken

Thanks Ken. I'll take all under advisement and try a few things....I'm off work today. We'll see where I get today and if I get to needing that AW4, I'll definitely give you a PM.

Ok. so...had it flushed. Drove it around the interstate and town for a while. Doesn't seem to be having any issues. I guess we'll see. Also went ahead and re-seated all the connections to electronics inside the engine compartment (tps, throttle body stuff) and gave it a tune up while I was at it...plugs, cap, rotor, wires. So far so good.
Thanks for the help.

I should have done a little more research - I did mention linkages for the transmission, but not for the throttle body per se. Silly me should have known to also mention either doing a wiggle test or check all your engine management sensor connectors as well as the ones for the transmission and PCM/ECU, etc. This gives me an idea IRT an older Dodge Caravan that someone I know is / was having issues with. Glad to hear it settled out for you, Andy. That was probably much cheaper than anything more intensive and involved.

Oh, and as an add-on, I should have also mentioned that you probably could have taken it to Advance or one of the parts stores that may do a free diagnostic code pull for you - if you don't have your own reader. I'm not sure if Jeeps are like others ... I know how to pull codes on some vehicles without using a reader -- but I prefer a reader so I don't mis-count the number of times the light flashes, etc. Where I was going with this is that it might have been possible that the TPS issue may or may not have thrown a diagnostic code - and I should have known or advised that was where the starting point should be, depending. Again, glad to hear you got 'er back to normal.

The first time it threw a code, Karla took it to Advanced and she wrote the code and reason down. I diagnosed it through the slew of internet forums and came down to changing the tranny filter and a couple quarts of merc 3. While it temporarily extinguished the check engine light, it wasn't for long.
I wouldn't say I have my fingers crossed and am hopeful that this puts any other serious maintenance off for a while. Am still considering a project rebuild on an AW4 cause I'd like to keep the XJ going as long as possible.

I hear ya there, Andy. I still got some fine-tuning to do on the old Ford. I just hope it's not any more involved than it has to be, I really don't feel like pulling and sticking a distributor or doing a timing chain ... but my luck will be I wind up having to do both Dave G
