anyone have a clue how much i could get a engine and trans for my jeep for? its a 95 yj 2.5l...the dealer is looking at it now and says the engine is gonna need to be replaced. their quote was $4400 lol. then said my poor transmission is having trouble too. sigh. i am not very skilled with engine swaps either. thanks for the help. i am looking to have it a dd and have fun with it on the trail too. so maybe a 4.0 motor or something. Oh i have 4:88 gears if that makes a difference.
thanks matt

i think maybe just another 2.5l would be my best bet because i dont have a clue how to deal with different mounting brackets and such.

Have you looked at getting the engine rebuilt? What's wrong with it in particular? Did you have any indication that the transmission was going bad before the dealer told you?

Paul i kinda of thought the trans was bad but it may have just been the engine missing and not running the right way which threw me off. I am not quite sure how they knew the trans was bad because it doesnt run well enough to drive..i did start it last night and drove it a few feet in first gear. it switched into 4x4 also. I took it to the jeep dealer on military highway where we have the meetings. i figured that would be a good place. i didnt ask how much to rebuild it...perhaps i should have but i think from what i got from my service rep they dont wanna mess with it because of how old the jeep is. I surely am not about to buy a motor from them for $4400 lol. thanks for the replys it feels good to be back part of the 4x4 world....driving cars just isnt as much fun.

just called them back and they dont rebuild motors there...i asked how they knew my trans was bad but they couldnt answer because my service rep left for the day...fair enough its 6pm. Also i keep forgetting there is a jeep dealer in norfolk, so to clear it up its the Greenbrier jeep dealer.

another question...those that remember me know i ask tons of them lol. its been awhile since i drove it and such.. but a 2.5l with 4:88 gears and 33s has enough power right? of course a 4.0 sounds nice but someone tell me its not worth the hassle. lol

missed my service rep and tech again today but my paper work say "trans is noisy" could that just mean low on fluid?

missed my service rep and tech again today but my paper work say "trans is noisy" could that just mean low on fluid? Could mean a number of things. Low on fluid, bearings going bad, no carpet on the floor of the Jeep ;D. I'd drain the fluid out of the tranny to get an idea of it's condition, and to see if any pieces or parts come out.

lol no carpet check...no gear shift cover thing on at the time..so you can see the trans so maybe they can hear it better...i am however draining the jeep of ALL fluids just spent $115 at advanced auto in oil and such. lol.

so are you getting the engine checked out or swapped? I also don't remember seeing what type of transmission that you have? (std or auto) Your transmission and tire size will determine your axle ratio. 4.88 for a standard transmission and if I read correctly a 4.56 for auto. That's to get back into a factory setup. 4.88 could be used for an auto but it would give you lower gearing that would rev the engine higher at interstate speed but be more responsive in city and off road use. If you need any shop recommendations (eng re-builders and transmission) post up a separate post because EVERYONE has a different opinion and it would run your thread up quickly!
