Popped my cherry on a JK for a buddy of mine, not a whole lot different than other builds, same things have to be done but this only took about 12 hours yesterday and a few this morning finishing up. Would of been faster but he wanted to learn and I took my time showing him stuff and explaining things on his rig and what they do.
Kit used: AEV JK 3.5 Standard kit
Tires: 315 70 17 BFG AT Radials
Observations on this kit and in general;
- Very simple kit, very few parts, good progressive springs, proprietary Bilstein Shocks, New rear track bar and beefy relocation bracket for rear axle. Reuses stock control arms and most of the bolts. With the JK crossover steering only had to do a very minimal toe change and the steering wheel was still good to go. I was concerned about it because all the crap the ESP interferes with but no drama.
Issue: Took off for the first test drive and hit about 20-25 down the road and BANG! bad Death Wobble. Putted back to the house crawled under and found I forgot to tighten one end of the front track bar. Tightend it up to spec and it was good to go.
There is an AEV 4.5 Premium which gets you a high steer setup and of course taller springs. The 3.5 as you can see has no issues with 35's....the 4.5 will run 37" tires no problem. Below are the build pic's...
Uses these brackets to outboard the front shocks to minimize interference during suspension cycling.
Little puny stock girly tires!!! Lol
My buddy getting on the spring compressors!!!!!
Springs and shock in front...Love Bilsteins for Jeeps...great all around shock for the money....
Front swaybar link axle bracket....
FINISHED!!!
Maybe I can get on to my Grand build one of these days!!!!
Later,
Will
