Note - This information was verified today (7-8-2011) by the VA4WDA Land Use Coordinator. Been there quite a few times myself. I've run it backwards from the Rt 745 entrance and from the top at the Crabtree Falls entrance. The short story is this another situation like Second Mtn, Dry River, and Dictum Ridge. It's been done so long that everyone thought it's ok. But it's not. Look at the Forest Service map. The areas in white are private property. Shoe Creek trail runs right through it, and a right of way is not deeded to the Forest Service (although that area doesn't seem to be an issue). Most importantly look at the exit to Rt745. You know how at the end of the trail you cross the stream for the last time and it turns in to a driveway? That access to the hard road is private and a right of way is also not deeded. The trail is marked in red and ends at the private property. You need permission from the land owner to use it. So you can get to the end, but you can't get out. Have to turn around and go back. There have been reports of the Forest Service Ranger waiting at the end and informing fourwheelers of this. I have not heard of action being taken by the Forest Service. This is FYI so you can decide on doing it the right way.
