So, I requested the days off for this. That is a solid maybe to if I'll go.
I enjoy the camping aspect, so as long as there is fire and some trees, I'd be good to go. Other than seeing some nice overlooks, the actually wheeling part is secondary.
Skidmore is off 33 near Kephart, right? Kephart always seemed to have some nice trailery areas at the beginning of the trail. I was always partial to that trail because you could camp back there and hear people coming a mile away. Either way...I can tent or hammock depending on the weather, if I go.
If there is beer, fire, and no early morning "we must go NOW" rushes, I may be game for this. Even if it snows. Maybe even especially if it snows. How cold could it be, after all?

I'm a maybe right now. If the tax return gets in in time and I can get the new tires and gears for the TJ then I'll be driving up. If they are forecasting snow I won't be going. Locker in the front doesn't like ice/snow.

I understand, suit yourself. Gears and tires for GWNF fireroads? Don't want to see snow? Are we talking about the same place?

It will be just like the other times you've been there with me, everyone will be lucky to be ready by 1100. Then we might get a trail in. Then we might go to town for dinner, or might not and just go back and light a fire and grill dinner. There is no itinerary, no time schedule, just some camping, talking, hopefully some trail riding and this:

Just what is that supposed to mean? When you get to be Derek's age, you will realize time is precious, then you'll WANT to be hitting the trails at 8 or 8:30. You youngins just wait and see.

It's more along the lines of I'm going to be driving my junk up there and I need a re-gear with the tires I have but I'm not going to waste the money to re-re gear because I've got to get new tires anyways. 4.10's and 33's with a 4 cylinder auto does not make for a pleasant or fuel efficient trip. Although I have filed now... I will have enough for a tow dolly, gears, and tires after all... Plus side to a year of alimony I guess! Paul G.

As this gets closer we need to figure out the firewood situation. Not sure where up there is a convenient place to grab some, and I'm not really interested in cutting up firewood at the campsite.

I might be able to throw some in the back of the jeep... Otherwise when Jesse, Sandy and myself were up there in July we were grabbing as we went along. But we were also having a fire for entertainment and not warmth at night...

Okay, onto weather. I've been looking at historical weather data for this area and I see that there is an average high of 50 degrees and an average low of about 25 degrees. Now there's an all time recorded low of -14 in February and an all time recorded high of 85 in March.
So, we're looking at weather ranging anywhere from -14 to 85. I can pack to accommodate that.
HOWEVER, I have to say, the last few days have been the coldest days I've ever experienced outside for long periods of time. I mean, my darn pen got so cold it wouldn't write...and I took hours to warm up after I got home!
My point being...I'm hoping for 85. I wonder what the chances of that are.... ....and yeah, I'll most likely be there.
And I can bring some firewood too I think. I just have to buy it from down the road.

We will see what happens. If its icy, rainy or in the teens then I'll either cancel my involvement in the trip or stay in town at the Hampton Inn. I like cool weather, can tolerate 30 degree weather, but I'm not up for cold weather training...I had enough of that in the Corps and it sucked.
