After months of looking I finally landed a 1st Gen 4Runner. '86 Newly rebuild engine New all terrain tires Very little rust. Right now the plan is to build sliders, bumpers, lock it front and rear, paint it and wheel. I all ready have one full up rig so this one is mainly for trips to the beach, Oak Ridge, and things like that. The body has a little rot, but not bad. Eventually I plan on doing the whole solid axle swap thing. It is also an automatic which limits what you can do in terms of crawl boxes. Eventually I will switch in a manual with a crawl box, but it is not a priority. If anyone has some 4x2 steel laying around I would like to buy if off of you. I'm also looking for a toyota 8" elocker for the rear.

That's a nice looking runner. I went with 4xinnovations sliders for mine and couldn't be happier. The auto does limit stuff a little but I believe Inchworm sells the parts to adapt a geared case to it $$$. For a runaround vehicle the auto is actually pretty nice as long as you don't plan on getting anywhere too fast.

I really like the 4xinnovation stuff. I was going to order sliders and tube doors, but the shipping is a killer. It cost more to ship the sliders and doors then the doors cost. While not nearly as sexy a set of square stock sliders will work just as well for maybe $40 dollars. I guess it all depends what the scrap yard has.

I went with them to save time not money but I'm the first to understand budget constraints. Post up some pix with progress.
Are you still running stock gears? If so then you could keep an eye out for 2nd gen 4runners with the 3.0 and 31" tires as 4.88 was a common option. It's a cheap way to re-gear and they show up at PnP pretty regular.

Nice find. I randomly see 1st Gen 'runners and their pickup counterparts 'round here. People seem to want to hold onto them.

First time Ive ever seen anyone suggest something Scott bought was too much $. 4x is cheaper then trail gear on the sliders and way cheaper then marlin on the sliders. The doors were only 5 dollars more then trail gear. It seems like most of the traditional toyota suppliers I dealt with have become trail-gear resellers and stopped marketing their own products. Probably not even cost effective to make my own if it was not for shipping. The 4 cylinder auto is either 4:43 or 4:30. No one seems to agree. I'm going to have to go check what I actually have. PaulC has an elocker he will sell me for a good price, but it has got the wrong gears in it. It looks like gears and bearing to setup an new ratio is going to be around 500 dollars. At that point I might as well drop in a zip locker and not have to deal with the electrical side. On that note I've only seen one Toyota truck at PnP in the three years I have lived here. I pull Ford parts for the tow rig all the time. There are more 3.0 and 3.4 cars then you can shake a stick at, but never any 22res. At the VA4WD association meeting at Starr I was talking to two toyota guys. They said there was a guy down in Suffolk with a ton of toyota parts. Supposed to be on the same road with Starr. Anyway I haven't found him yet. Stopped by Public Scrap in Hampton today and picked up the plate for my bumpers. I love that place. $.35 a lb for steel and $4 for cutting. There is a little old guy that works up there and he knows were everything is and he will cut you whatever you need so you don't end up buying a lot of extra you don't need. I'm sure their insurance would have a stroke if they knew, but they have no problem with me wondering around looking for exactly what I want. Lots of vary large equipment running around and its on you to stay out of the way. I was supposed to be heading up to Albany this weekend to see friends, but the weather is bad and my flight go cancelled. Hopefully that means I can get my rear bumper done and maybe start on the front.

The first gens are supposed to have the 4.30 but from talking to a few people that isn't 100% definite. Mine did come with them and now it has 4.88's (thanks Jim) which still isn't enough with 33x10.50 tires and a very tired 22re. I could use 5.29 to help hold any speed on small hills or even to run with the ac on the interstate. The auto overdrive is higher than the manual overdrive which hurts it. I have seen a ton of 2nd gen 4runners at PnP, just keep checking their inventory online. Last time I was there they had one which probably had the 4.88 and that was a couple of months ago. The parts place people are telling you about is Red's but I don't think he is technically in business right now for some legal reasons. His place is on 460 a little past Windsor. There is a guy in Moyock that post a lot of stuff on Craigslist who seems to pick up a lot of stuff.

Made a little progress. Nothing earth shattering. The 80 tube bumper that dropped 6 in below the frame is gone. Mounts are made for the new bumper. I have the stock for the new bumper, but put that project on hold for a day or two. The interior of the 4runner was nasty. I've done quite a few builds for work trucks, offroad trucks, competition sound cars. This was the nastiest one I've done. I don't think anyone had cleaned the interior in the 28 years this truck has been around. The rear seat belts were crusty and didn't bend. Everything had to come out. Seats are going to get recovered interior got bed lined today. I did find one of the rust spot is actually a hole through the skin. I have a little more body work then planned ahead of me. Oh well.

Not much progress, everything is taking longer then it should. Stereo is in, still waiting on the rear speakers. Sub enclosure is done and sub is installed. Still waiting on the wiring for the amp. Did get the switch panel made for the seat heaters, locker, and lights. Small win. Unfortunately I ran out of crimp terminals so I couldn't wire it.

Rear bumper is coming together. Of course I ran out of welding wire 2/3 of the way through. I'm also registered and insured now. I should be driving it tomorrow for the meeting.

Do you have any pictures of how the bumper is tied into the frame? One of these years I would lke to build a plate style rear for mine to match the front arb.
