So where does everyone go to get their trailer inspected? Anyone use a facility in/near V.B.?

There is a shop at the end of Dean Drive that can do trailers. The inspector has property near the Dry River District, as him about it.....

Kind on-and-off-thread here - I asked while I was on leave about inspections in TX and seems to me that they aren't done for them under a certain length / GVWR. Something I'll need to find out about when I finish freshening up my old 1/2 ton truck-bed trailer. Is there a requirement / cut-off for this in VA?

Got brakes? Get an inspection. Got two or more axles? Get an inspection. I think that rules out my trailer, unless I leave the existing drive axle under it (Ford 9"). Plan on replacing that with a regular trailer axle kit or fabbing up something to replace it. Dave G

3000# GVWR = brakes = inspection. Number of axles matters not.
So if you're making a homemade trailer register it with a GVWR of 2999# if you don't want to put brakes on it. Even then I think I'd want brakes on it for safety though.

FAQs on the State Police website: I have a small trailer and I would like to know if it is required to be inspected. It depends. If the "actual gross weight" is 3,000 pounds or more, it is required to have brakes and is required to be inspected. (The "actual gross weight" is the weight of the trailer plus the weight of any load that the trailer is carrying.) If the "actual gross weight" is less than 3,000 pounds, it is not required to be inspected; however, any trailer under 3,000 that is equipped with brakes is also required to be inspected.
