I recently towed a jeep and trailer with my friends Titan and it pulled great. Have any of you guys had any experience with this truck or heard anything about them. I am looking for a truck to tow my YJ. I really like this truck, I really like the price and the dealer say its rated towing capasity is 10,000 lbs, but I would like a little input if possible Thanks Tommy.

I think there is very limited knowledge on this truck in here. Most people in here use one of the big 3 (Mostly Dodge) I think one or 2 use a Tundra but I don't know if anyone is using a Titan to tow. Also is this going to be primarily for towing or are you going to be using it as a daily driver of sorts? I don't see anything wrong with it but you might want to do a little more research online. It is a half ton truck so I would be worried about towing 6K lbs in the mountains. I know with my Cummins and trailer (About 12 to 14K) when you get to the other side of Charlottesville you can loose a lot of power quick in the mountains. I don't know how the 1/2 ton would perform there. Not to mention the transmission... Get into Edmunds and sites like that to see how they rate them. If I'm not mistaken Peterson's also had a titan for a long term test that they towed with a few times. And there are also a few Titan forums out there so those would probably be your best bet to hear from the actual owners... See what they say then make a decision.
Personnely... If i'm going to tow anything more then my ATV... I would rather do it with diesel... even an older one is quite affordable now.

I agree with Paul. I towed my travel trailer (28 foot) with a 1/2 ton dodge for a while and it did pretty well on flat ground but as soon as we headed towards any sort of mountains it sucked. Not enough power and transmission had to work overtime just to handle the weight. Go with a diesel or at least a large gas motor. I am currently towing with a V10 powered F250 and am quite happy with it.

Don't be fooled by towing capacity ratings. It's a marketing ploy and is misleading. Instead look at what the vehicle weighs and then look at what its GCW is and you'll get a good idea of how much you can really tow. I like those Titans and I'm a die hard Ford guy. You'll find after you load up the gear and a 16ft trailer and the YJ you'll be overloaded or right at the limit. Still, I wouldn't think twice about using a Titan to tow a Jeep on a short car hauler. Those trucks are nice, and I'd get one with 4wd and the selectable lockers. I never towed with one so I'm no help. Going through the mountains you'll have to take it out of OD or it will be shifting a lot. And honestly if you plan to tow often and going across country to Moab I'd go for the diesel or the V10 in teh 3/4 ton flavor. It's up to you and what you want.

I decided to go ahead and get the Titan. It took some work, but I found it with the 8' bed. That was the hardest part of the deal. I used it this past week and towed the jeep to Corolla. It towed great (plenty of power) and I am very pleased with how well it actually did in the sand I only got stuck once ( it was in two wheel drive, but I had to try it). I went with the King cab, long bed, 4X4 and the 5.6. It will do well for how often I plan tow. Thanks to all for your advice.

Glad to hear you got something you like. I was reading through this and my head nearly impacted the keyboard when I saw Keith talking about towing in overdrive, though Dave G

I don't know why you'd hit your head Dave, there's nothing wrong with towing in OD as long as you aren't lugging and shifting in and out all the time. With my Exploder I couldn't use OD, had to leave it locked out. With my truck it rarely downshifts and does just fine. There's about 3 times it has to downshift between here and Crozet, and that's towing 14-15K.

I agree with that Keith, with my trailer and toy I can use the cruise control at 70 to 75 mph. It's also no more 6000 pounds, with a 30ft with 2 rigs might be a different story.

I only hit my head because every owner's manual I've ever read says not to tow in overdrive, whether an auto or manual. But I keep forgetting that y'all tow at 60-70+ mph.... Dave G

I've never had a problem towing in od in either of my tow rigs. The Chevy didn't have a Drive position only an OD position on the 4l80. It also didn't have a tow/haul or od off button. The Dodge has a OD off switch but I only turn the OD off on long hills (like the other side of Charlottesville). Or if I get stuck behind slower traffic and the RPM's drop too low. Other then that I say tow and go. Get a trans temprature gauge though... it's cheap insurance so you know when to back out of the throttle.

10-4 on the trans temp gauge. That reminds me about what I heard about the Titans temp gauge. They have a trans temp gauge, but you should think of it more as an inaccurate idiot light with the settings of "good" and "you just smoked it." I'd look in to adding a better gauge like Autometer or whatever.

Definitely something I'll invest in for my mall-rated junk (the '89). The Ford A4LD is a quirky sumbee and doesn't like running hot. I may even invest in a better aftermarket radiator and electric fan setup for it, just in case I do some light trail riding in it.
Definitely something to consider for a two rig with an automatic, though. A hot transmission is a bad thing. Might also want to invest in an aftermarket add-on external cooler placed inline from the 'cool side' outlet of the stock cooler to keep things cool and avoid problems.

Glad to hear you got something you like. I was reading through this and my head nearly impacted the keyboard when I saw Keith talking about towing in overdrive, though Dave G I'm with Keith on this one - most new stuff does fine towing in OD. Just has to be the newer stuff. Speaking of Ford stuff since it's what both of us are used to, you're probably thinking of the A4LD, AOD, and pre-95 E4OD, I burned up my share of old E4OD parts in the Bronco towing a small trailer in overdrive. The newer E4OD, as well as its 4R100 and later descendants, have a substantially beefed up overdrive and better coolers, and the newer transmissions are specifically designed for OD towing. As for coolers, I've started completely ditching the in-tank stock cooler on all my automatics. There's no need for them in VA, since most of the time they will actually serve as a warmer rather than a cooler (to get the trans up to temp faster in cold weather), and it just isn't cold enough down here to need them. I'm running straight stacked plate coolers with thermostats on the Bronco (which I still haven't finished ) and the dually I've been putting together. [Editor's note - nope, I'm not dead, just been trying to finish up my masters. I should be done in a couple weeks, so hopefully I'll be able to come out and play again soon! Maybe the picnic at Harold's if I'm lucky.]
