I work at adesso precision machine in norfolk. I think we charge 50 an hour but not shure. What do you need I might be able to get an idea on pricing for you.

Felts Machine in Suffolk does pretty good work. He can do all of that, but I am unsure if he will assemble. They didn't use to but they have grown and might do it now.

You really need to come up with a game plan for what you need to do for a rebuild and get prices. Make a list something like this. Normally there is a set price for block work, crankshaft and cylinder head work. 1. Engine block. is it salvageable. basic things to do: Clean block, bore, freeze plugs, oil galley plugs, cam bearings installed and check main bearing caps for alignment. 2. Heads, Complete valve job and check heads for being flat. Verify proper clearance of valve guides. Replace any bad valves. 3. Fitting new pistons to rods and install piston rings. 4. Crankshaft, measure/machine for new bearings for the main journals and rod bearing journal. 5. Once machining is complete work with the shop and have them order proper size bearings for the entire engine. Plus a complete engine gasket set. There are several things to replace to such as , water and oil pump. Might even find a new timing cover / oil pump housing for the aluminum covers wear and will cause a loss of oil pressure. Rebuilding an AMC V8 isn't getting cheaper either. 10 years ago when I built mine ended up with around 1700.00 and still runs like a top today. Now this isn't by any stretch of a exact what to do list, Every engine will vary but for the AMC engine is pretty close. I have worked with Apples machine in York County and Bunner Engine developement both on the peninsula here in Newport News. For more info on AMC engines look up this web addy www.froadin.comhth tim

As an add on to Tim's post, I'll say getting a rebuilt AMC V8 long block isn't very cheap either, last I checked. You mentioned one of the cylinders is scored "a pretty nasty scratch"... how deep is it? If the block is otherwise 'virgin', you could probably get away with a .020-.030 overbore -- As Tim said, "is the block salvageable" and I'll add, "at what cost?". If the scratch is deeper than the max safe oversize you can bore the block out to, then you'll have to think about sleeving (not very cheap, if I recall). Always good to have a plan with some redundant fall-backs in case something comes up that changes the original scope of the project. What is really a money saver is if you have all the required measuring tools handy and were able to do a lot of that part yourself ... then, all you'd have to do is tell the machine shop what needs to be done.... and hope they don't milk you with their own re-check of all of it Dave G

Sleeve isn't to bad about 100$. The motor is in pretty good shape other than that and I have a good timing cover, Felts seems to be able to do what I want so I need to get my stuff to them and get a price Then start working ot and o.k.ing it with the Mrs
