Which axle is it? You might be able to rotate it and weld the tubes. What did you do to break the plug welds?

Apparently the 304 isn't as tired as your signature suggests. I'd get up w/ Paul Cleary to get the axle back together. Now is a good time to go to a double cardon rear shaft too.

Its a amc 20. I don't want to scrap the axle since I have put gears Detroit and one piece axles in it. How do I get touch with Paul. I think that's what happened the plug welds. I already have the drive shaft and its not buggered up. Video should be on youtube in a few days look for the red cj7with all the blue smoke. Limped home on the front axle almost 200 miles.

The axle tubes are the weak link on this axle. Charles pressed 1/2'' wall tubes in his. You can't run axle seals, but it makes for a very sturdy unit. He ended up dumping that for a 9". Or just live with the tubes welded....You may need a traction bar.

Looks kind of like this now? Karen did this at Crozet. What I did was while it was still on the trailer used a chain fall around the pinion to the trailer frame and pulled the pinion back down to correct position. Only problem after that is that the tubes were bent and it wouldn't hold oil inside the rear axle seal. You may get lucky and yours may be fine. I would be leary about the outer pinion bearing not having oil on it for 200 miles. I have a 20 in my CJ still but it is welded at the axle tubes to prevent the rotation. There are plenty of AMC 20 out there especially narrow track. I think Ted W near Richmond has some. But if you have to replace the housing, I can help you get the gears set back up. located in Newport News tim

Yep that looks like mine. I can change the outer pinion bearing that's no big deal If I need a housing I'll have to get a wide track. I will need help with the gears if I have to change the housing.

Just remember the outer pinion bearing is an interference fit to the pinion. Can be a pain to get apart sometimes. Don't forget the crush sleeve that would also have to be replaced as well.
