Right now I am thinking about buying a 2nd Gen Ram for a daily driver. I'm thinking about getting a 1500 club cab with the 5.9 and a tow package. How well would this tow a XJ? I know there are better vehicles out there to tow with, but the primary function would be a daily driver, and I don't want anything too massive. I wouldn't be towing all the time, maybe once or twice a year.
How well do 2500's compare with the 1500's on size and gas consumption? If a 2500 is going to be just the same to drive, and gets the same gas milage as a 1500 with the same motor, I might just look into getting a 2500. Thoughts? Thanks.

Not sure if you're dead set on a gas engine but after having driven my recently purchased 04 Duramax Diesel for a couple of weeks... I can honestly say I will always have a diesel truck to drive for the rest of my life. They are that much better... especially to tow with. If you're set on Dodge, maybe a 2500 CTD?.. it's an awesome rig.

You'll have to decide for yourself on if you want a gasser or diesel. But I would recommend you at least get a 3/4 ton truck. It'll most likely have a stiffer ride and will be heavier, and will cost a bit more in property taxes and registration, but you won't be saying I wish I had more truck. I've only heard people with the 1/2 ton trucks say how they wished they had a beefier suspension, etc. But yeah, if you found the deal of the century on a 1/2 ton, it'll tow it.

We use our Durango to tow. It has similar running gear, 5.9, 46RE tranny good for 60K miles (The pickup may have the 47RE) rated for 7500 lbs. We get a steady 11 mpg around town. We get 14 mpg on the highway. We get 9-10 mpg towing our 2200 lb trailer and 3500 lb(?) CJ7. All of this at the posted speed limits, with nice slow and smooth starts and stops. The 2500 should have better/bigger brakes I would hope. It isn't getting all that stuff moving, its getting all that stuff stopped! Just my $.02

DING DING!
problem here, they dont put the 5.9 Cummins in the 1/2 tons.
and Harold has no problems towing his XJ AND truck camper with his '01 2500 with cummins.

I have a 99 Ram 2500 with the Cummins. I get about 16 MPG as an everyday vehicle. On the highway I get almost 21 MPG. When towing the Jeep on a trailer I get around 13. The 24V engine is a little louder than a gasser but you can't beat the torque and the ride isn't too bad empty. It rides like a luxury car when loaded.
