I noticed I had really bad MPG and a check engine light for both Pre-cat O2 sensors. Climbing under my jeep I noticed that both Cats are loose where they meet the headers. Does anyone know the bolt and nut dimensions for this connection. I would like to replace them, I will most likely get longer bolts and double nut it. I have a 4.5 hour trip to MD this weekend and 200 miles per tank just wont cut it. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Those clasp nuts frequently loosen up. I just keep tightening mine every so often. Double nutting or using lock nuts will probably help. Just take one of the nuts off and match it up at the hardware store. Unless it is really loose it probably won't make much difference in mpg though. The biggest change to made there is driving speed, speedometer correctness (to make sure your mileage is accurate), gearing, and how far you push down with your right foot.

Thank you for your quick response to my question. I do see your point with the Speedo being off . But I am also getting consistent CELs for both precat O2s Since the cats are loose enough to shake by hand and rattle at start up I believe they are plenty loose to let air in between pulses. LOL also since this is the lowest cost attempt I am going to get some bolts. thanks again I will post my findings

I cant really remember right now but I want to say those are studs in the exhaust manifold. Getting them to come out could be tricky. If they are threaded in then there is a good chance they are siezed and you do NOT want to break them off trying to remove them. If they are pressed in or tack welded in place, same deal. Be carefull or you will ruin your day. This is precisely the reason I just grab two long extensions and every oil change or so I slide underneath and snug up the nuts.
Those precats are known to go bad, and depending on your mileage they can still be under warranty for your 05. You are on the right track but if sealing it up and changing sensors doesn't work, you may need to get those cat converters tested to make sure they aren't broken up and clogged.
I like the idea of the stage 8 locking nuts if they will work without need to change the studs.

He could just get the nuts or washers if he got the Nords.

I'm gonna check on using those myself!!! Thanks Paul. I'll take a look at the thread size but I want to say 3/8" course thread.
BTW, 200 miles to the low fuel light isn't off all that much. It's not great but I'm not getting a whole lot better myself. All depending on how fast I drive and what I'm doing. What is your hand calculated mpg? All highway or mixed driving? Is your odometer accurate?

Just to keep this discussion going, and because I like to instigate:
Keith - now you might be in a better mind set to understand why I drive the BMW most days - I get 400 miles out of 14 gallons. How does your 'don't be afraid of low gears' Rubi with all the extra light weight Aluminum compare?
Topcat - I wish you the best. Tighten up your exhaust and if the O2 CEL doesn't go off, replace them. If they are sending a bad signal to the engine CPU, it can be dumping all sorts of extra fuel into the mix to try to get the right O2 reading which will destroy your MPG and performance.
If that doesn't make everything better, I've found that a good fresh battery and spark plugs can make all the difference in the world sometimes.

How does your 'don't be afraid of low gears' Rubi with all the extra light weight Aluminum compare? why would you drive a bmw that gets only 28 mpg? You could get that from a liberty crd.

I bought the BMW for $4000, it has only 120K miles on it, and is fun to drive.
A Liberty CRD would be much more expensive to purchase, would not be fun to drive, and I'm not a 40 something dumpy woman with a ton of cats. From a quick online search, it looks like most CRD Liberty owners are reporting real world fuel mileage of 20-22 mpg.
I've got the stupid over built Heep and Excessive tow pig for when I want to play in the woods.
Thanks for keeping this going.
