Ive got an 84 cj7 with a 1st gen. sbc 350...t 5 tranny..I am having issues with the starter?..put a new one in... tried shims, no shims,,,..etc...sometimes she fires right up..other times it seems to bind up..when i turn it over..I thought it might just be i need more cranking amps in my battery because she'll fire off when on the battery charger everytime.....weird... anyone ever trouble shoot this problem before....everything seems to be hooked up the right way..... thanks

If you can start it up every time with the battery charger and not with the battery, take a good look at your battery terminals. You may have a big voltage drop accross them. Can you take the starter motor off and run it without issue? Will your flywheel spin with acceptable resistance? All the shims will do is change the contact pattern on the flywheel. Stein found this one the hard way....and late for OR.

If it will fire off when on the battery charger, then most likely your battery is kaput. Have it load tested. It might show good volts but not carry enough juice to turn the starter. If you are using a remote mounted solenoid that could be going bad too and not making good contact internally.

well the battery was new in sept. but it was drained dead on a few occassions...apparently the horn relay was cooked....literally melted.....took a while to figure out that mess but didn't solve the starting problem.. i think i need more cold cranking amps....hopefully that will resolve the issue..its amazing what happens when you keep throwing money at a problem ...but lately it just been throwing $$$ and problem still exists.... once she's running she is awesome...if i never shut it off then problem is fixed right??...ha ha

Your call. But i promise that if you have a good battery with 540 CCA or more it will turn over a SBC. Batteries dont take well to multiple discharges except for a deep cycle battery. If you didcharged it several times then it probably wont hold anything more than a weak top charge. Load testing a battery is free. And norm is correct, clean the terminals with a good terminal wire brush. They may look good but for lack of a better term a film will cover this terminals causing bad connections.

Another place to look is your ground connection between your engine block and body. If this is not a good clean connection, you can have all sorts of seemingly random electrical gremlins.

Just like I have a pile of red tops after changing them out when I sell the Jeep. It happens.
