I didn't know trailers were required to have an inspection. Is it all trailers or just specific sizes/weight?

Trailers equipped with brakes are required to be inspected. Generally, that would be trailers over 3K GW, but any trailer with brakes must be inspected. Below from VA admin code:
Trailers having an actual gross weight of less than 3,000 pounds are not required to be equipped with brakes; however, if brakes are installed, these vehicles must be inspected.

That's too bad. Coincidentally, I had mine inspected yesterday with the Exploder. A Trooper gave me a funny look on the way to the anniversary run, so I figured I better get it done.
If you get that inspection done and either take the pink slip court or send it in with a letter and ask for forgiveness, there's a great chance the judge will dismiss the ticket.

...Pulaski County Troopers have good eyes... The boys up in Pulaski don't fool around ... don't know if they still do, but once upon a time they had a reputation for pulling people on I81 for as little as 3-5 over, too. |

LOL, I just did mine today. Been going to Thomas Trailer on Military Hwy, next to Portsmouth trailer. Cost is $16 (went up a dollar Jul 1st). Make sure all lights work and have good covers, to include the license plate light. After checking all lights, he'll pull the emergency brake pin and expects to see all brakes hold. Lastly, he'll look at your brake pads.

It is always interesting at inspection time with the trailer. Actually it gets done pretty quickly since it takes up most of the waiting area where it gets inspected.... 32 foot trailers, got to love em!

got a big question since my new truck has VA plates, with me being military and the trailer comming from a state that does not require tags on trailers how do i get around having to get tags for it

Why not register it in VA, being out of state military you wouldn't have to pay personal property tax anyway. At least that would keep the troopers from pulling you over and you having to explain and prove to them. Trailer inspection is very easy, providing you have a road worthy and safe trailer.

well unfortunatly the trailer is a home built so the initial inspection is the one that is a pain from what i understand

Being home built doesn't matter, it will either pass inspection or it won't. If you don't have a VIN on it, then DMV will give you one that you rivet on, then an officer will come inspect it. Only thing the officer will check is that VIN is applied in the correct location and matches the form you are going to have him sign.
