Has anyone tried to get a VIN (Virginia) on a homebuilt trailer bought used? The trailer has no title and no VIN, all I have is a bill of sales from the previous owner. The DMV says I can not get a VIN without a title, but you can not have a title without a VIN. I think I am at wall, can anyone help?

You gave them too much info. Go to DMV and tell them you need to get a VIN plate for a home built trailer. You attach said plate to trailer. You call the DMV inspector. He comes out and looks and signs your paper. You go to DMV and register YOUR homebuilt trailer with your new VIN.

you can call any law enforcement office's non emergency number and they will send some one out to verify that the vin plate is mounted with the rivets that they give you it is a whole lot more simple than people think. and the lady was an idiot cause how do you think you get vin plates for the trailers you buy from lowes. they give you a bill of sale and you go get the plate. I have already been through this stuff twice just go in there and tell them you built it and give them some bs cost of material and they will give you a vin plate and form for the cop to sign

Thanks for the help. I went to a different DMV got the VIN plates stuck them on, called the state police and everything worked out. Fixed the trailer up some and drove it to Snowshoe WV worked great. The only thing I need now is a diesel, my truck struggled bad in the mountain. ;D
