Did a short notice trip Sunday to Hatteras Island with the Fromme's and friend Ed, who will be a new TWFW member soon. We bee-lined straight to the Lighthouse in Buxton and took the requisite Lighthouse pics (which was closed for climbing). We then hit the beach access and went around the Point where we found a 4 foot high berm to climb and park atop near the water. There was a lagoon of water right there, too, but was probably a bit too deep to ford even with a my lift and snorkel. Here's Ed going up berm- Hill climbing on the berm, kiddie style- Leaving the berm to get on the dune trails, Keith got a couple feet of air under his right rear tire droppping off. Too bad I was driving and not taking the pic! We then ate at a restaurant in Buxton after playing around on the dune trails, which had some minor water holes. Bellies full, we then hit a couple Sound-side trails which were dry. After hard rains these short trails can be very deep and will challenge waterproofing. At Ramp 27 we hit the beach, traveling north to Ramp 23. We came upon some more berms and a fun dune in the middle of the beach. When we stopped to watch each other on the berm, Keith's Explorer decided it didn't want to go any further in the deep ruts. Not a bad stuck, an easy push got him out- Actually Ed and I pushed him out! After that we hit Oregon Inlet and hung out for a bit to enjoy the sunset- Oh yea on the way out Ed tugged another Explorer out of the sand!! ;D

Ya, Ed had a good time breaking in the Rubi. And even though the Exploder buried itself till it sat on the frame rails, it did pretty ok. First time I'd ever been wheeling on the beach, even Cheryl drove around for a bit. Makes me want to lift it and get bigger tires though.

Or get a trailer for the CJ... ;D I don't think they even make lifts for those Explorers yet. I know there's lifts for the 91-94 models, but they have coil springs up front. I think 95-up have some sort of torsion bar setup? *shrug*

I've got a trailer, just didn't feel like hauling it. You're right, they don't make lifts for the newer Explorers, I was just wishing, I'll most likely not do either. The rear axle shafts literally go through the center of the frame rails, so it's impossible to lift it without some major fab work. The front is no problem, it's nothing but a coilover setup. I have seen some enthusiasts modify a Ranger body lift kit to work though.

I still got a kick watching that tire lift way up dropping off the berm. Cheryl did great at Oregon Inlet, those ruts were deep! ;D

It was a great time. Learned alot from Dave and Kieth. I learned that not all explorers can explore like the jeep can. I am looking foreward to the misfit run for the Rubi's first OFFICIAL trip. Thanks again for inviting me!!!!!!!!!!!!
