I was wondering what the deal was on greasing an 8274 or what the greas fitting went to. Iv had the beast for a year now and after the 20+ vehicles winched up CJ-5 hill, I was wondering if it needed any maintenance. BEN W

Hi Ben,
Hope you don't mind, but I moved this over to tech forum. Might get more notice there. Good question! Warn doesn't say much about maintenance, other than inspecting the wire rope, thimble, and hook. Anyone have tips about the care and feeding of these winches?

The only thing that I can find on the Warn web site is that you are not supposed to submerge the winch. Don't see anywhere as to how to maintain it.

yea I saw that too in my owners manual. I think it read if it is submerged to send it back to them for rebuild or something. I am wondering if there has been enough water crossings to apply, probably not, but also what the grease fitting is for and how often it should be greased. BEN

I looked all over their site and couldn't find anything on that. SAE 30 should be what you would run in a lawn mower IIRC. I think that my honda push mower says to run SAE 30 oil. Should be able to find it at any Auto store. Key word being should. Jonathan

Ben,
Greasing zert located along side the clutch paw you can use standard wheel bearing grease there. As for the roller assembly the non motor side comes off when you remove the winch from the vehicle fairly easily. You can spread some grease along the inside of both as well. As for opening it up. You shouldn't really need to unless it is leaking and you will know that when it happens. That would be your 30 wt oil. My old 8274 started leaking (not the one I have now) I just kept adding oil to it from one of the bolt holes that holds on the electric motor.

Ken,
That is quite an impressive write up isn't it. I always find it amazing how people tear something like that apart put it back together again and it works and they also remember to take pictures of it and do a complete write up of the process. It really puts a lot of the magazines to shame with some of the stuff on the internet.

Iv also found a site out there a while back where someone put drain and fill plugs to drain the oil without breaking it apart, ran a cooler coils around the motor to cool it. replaced the drum with a smaller to increase speed. COOL mods for a winch BEN
