I've heard from a couple sources that the beads 16" tires are much smaller than that of a 15" tire and more likely to slip off. Is this true? I will be in the market for tires and most likely rims soon. I'm currently running a 33x12.50-15 on a 15x8 rim but want to move up to a 35" tire. The question is whether to go to a 16x8 rim ot a 15x10 since I think I'd get an awful lot of sidewall flex from the current rims. What do you guys think?

16.5" rims are the ones you want to stay away from. The 16.5s have a lot more choices and usually the tires you have on them have the higher load ranges for trucks that need to tow or haul stuff around. They don't have much of an inner bead and are not good to go wheeling in. However, I believe that 16" rims are just as good as the 15"s because they have the beads to keep the tires slipping off. I don't think that the 15 is bigger than 16..... But you can get 16" tires and they too will have some of the higher load rangs if that is what you are looking for. Me, I run 16"s for the 37" boggers and 16.5s for my street tires, Ground hawgs, so that I could get the higher load range.

Well the extra load capacity was part of the reason I thought 16x8s would be the way to go. The other part is right now on my 15x8 w/ 33s, if you pulled a straight line off the rim to the outside of the tire, I'd have 9" of sidewall, essentially. If I go up to 35s I'd have 10" of sidewall which may or may not feel sloppy. If I went up to a 16" rim, I'd have 9½" of sidewall, which probably wouldn't be much different than what I have now. It's hard to find good info on this! Lots of people around are running 35s but there's a lot of weight and handling difference between a fullsize truck and a Jeep. Thanks for the info!

Good points about road handling. You can get 16"s with the extra load capacity. Those tires along with 16.5"s are usually 10 ply for the class E rating. So I would think that either a 16 or 16.5 would not matter much for a squishy feel, especially with 10 plies.....the only reall difference being that there does tend to be a slightly larger number of styles and sizes available for 16.5s plus they don't have a safety bead. But this availability of different styles is definitely changing.
It really does seem like a hard question and I know you want to do it right and not "regret" something.....but we are only talking about .5"! I think that either one would feel better than the 15"s so that you really wouldn't ever care if one was a hair better than the other.
