What is the best way to tell if your tranny mount is toast or on it's way out. My 97 TJ, when starting out in 1st will cause the shifter to bounce around alot. I also feel some vibration in the Jeep. Is it my tranny mount and how do I check it.

Take a floor jack and try lifting the t-case/trans CAREFULLY. If the mount is broken, it will come apart. If it starts lifting the vehicle, it is good. remember, when you first start to lift, the vehicle will rise a little. My guess is w/ 90K miles, the clutch may be going. If you heat up the clutch the flywheel may warp a little. If you ever do a clutch job, learn from my mistake, DO NOT put a flywheel back in w/out having it surfaced - NO MATTER HOW GGOD IT LOOKS, OR HOW SMOOTH IT FEELS. I was in a hurry and didn't do it to our Comanche, and the thing shudders every now and then.

Now you put carefully in all caps So I'm guessing that I should pay attention to what I'm doing when I check this. I'm really hoping that it isn't the clutch but it wouldn't surprise me with 94,556 miles on it. Just really hoping that it is something easier and cheaper. It only seems to do this when starting out in first. Guess I could always stick one of the little cameras under there and tape what it is doing for fun. I was kind of thinking that it might be the mount due to the way the drive line twists at take off. It doesn't seem to do it in any other gear. Guess it's time to roll around in the gravel driveway again.

Well when my YJ tranny mount decided to go, it allowed the tail shaft and yoke to hit the body when under load, up hill climbs and all. I think my jeep had very tight tolerances in this area. specially when I tried to replace with a poly mount and I didn't have enought space so had to bang out the skid plate Maybe check for play by wiggling the tailshaft. hahah ITS only 6 plate bolts and 3 tranny bolts BEN

Guess I should get off my lazy butt and crawl under there. Maybe if it's still light by the time I get home.

check the motor mounts while your at it. tim Thanks Tim. I figured I'd do that while I was crawling around. I figured that if the tranny mount was bad it would be putting additional stress on the motor mounts. Guess maybe I should just plan on replacing them, adding a 1" MM lift and 1" Body Lift then I could run 33's. Hmmm How can I sneak that by? Jonathan

Well, I figure by January I will need new tires anyway ;D and if I could run 31's with a stock set up then I don't see why with the Spacer lift I can't run at least 32's. But I would need rims with proper back spacing. When will it ever end?

No, I think that I could run 33/10.50's since I am currently running 31/10.50's. I do rub on the top of the coil tower which I would rather not do but I wouldn't have to change rims which I would rather not due since there is nothing wrong with them. I am leaning toward GY MT/R's. Maybe Lyle will tell me what width his tires are.

Maybe Lyle will tell me what width his tires are. Yep - mine are 31x10.50 MT/R's. With the 2" RE "budget boost" (spacer lift and new DT3000 shocks). With the stock rims, there is very minor rubbing on the lower control arms at full lock... no big deal, though. I guess I could put spacers behind the steering stops if it really bothered me, but it's not enough to really worry about. Mine's the 2.5 L, 5 spd with 4.10 gears. I think 31's are about the limit that I can do and still be able to use 5th gear on the highway. For what it's worth, I'm REAL happy with mine, great off road traction, not too noisy on the highway (where it spends 95% of it's time).
