Hey guys, I am building a ghetto style tachometer for the XJ. I have a tach unit out of a dash and I want to build a little cup and stand for it to be in. What I was going to do was simply get some 22gauge aluminum and bend it around the tach face and pop rivet it to hold the cup shape. What I was wanting to do for the back is use tin snips to cut a circle to put in the back. I would like to neatly hold it in there by soldering it on there...sorta of a cheap ass weld. Would this work? I have soldered plenty of electrical wires but I am wondering if this will hold? Does it matter if I use steel or aluminum sheet? I prefer the alum. cuz it is more pliable and lightweight, but I don't know if the two metals have different properties that would effect even a simple thing as just soldering to little pieces together....any advice for the metally challenged.

Cool, aluminum it is! I don't think it would be easy to bend and shape brass as it wold aluminum...

You can get aluminum solder at Northern. You can't solder aluminum to anything but aluminum. You could join brass, copper, or steel together.
