I will take ownership of a 1990 Jeep XJ with a 4.0 in may. Ive been planning out what i want to do for the past several months and hers as follows: 4.5 inch lift. Havent found one i want for the right price yet. still doing research and some 33 inch tires... pretty simple plan.. no it gets better. The jeep has 200.xxx miles on it and it shows. And the transmission shifts a little rough occasionally( i think a good drain and some good quality fluid will fix this up for the time being) Well this really wont be a DD too much. My concerns are the motor gernading along with the transmission upon instalation of the the bigger tires/lift. So i have to start making decisions. Im thinking a rebuild on the 4.0 myself, and putting a new transmission in it. I want to do a 5 speed swap, but not sure about the best route. I know some XJ's came with 5 speeds, but instead of trying to find that particular one, i want to know can i put a 5 speed from a YJ behind the 4.0 in the XJ? I mean they have the same motors so i dont see why this would be too complicated to adapt it to the the 4.0 in the XJ. I know ill need all the clutch componets and linkages etc.. im just want to know the compadibility between the two. or is their a simplier manual tranny swap im over looking for XJ's? Im trying to iron out all the bugs and get a game plan for this spring. Sorry about the long chopped up post, if you need any more info ask me. -lyons
