Take a perfectly good XJ and chop it all to hell... oh, this is going to be entertaining.... hopefully, the unibody frame doesn't snap in two before you finish ;D

Norm,
I can say this much, all of the Red Hook flavors I've had... yep, that's some good beer! Actually, all of the "local" beers in the PNW are pretty darn good. Then again, I have all sorts of different stuff I will and have consumed. It's just nice to mix it up a little every now and then.

Karl can take a joke. How did three dudes do two cases of work with a 12 pack?

I know Karl can take a good ribbing... and definitely dish it out! I think those were the first two six packs consumed... they probably had a beer runner....

Karl can take a joke. How did three dudes do two cases of work with a 12 pack? I drank all the beer and directed traffic. ;D Here's more. The "Frame" begins. Easy stuff. A little more toob work and we will start plating the unibody frame rails this weekend. And we will be drinking PBR in Norm's honor this weekend. That's some "manly" stuff. ;D

Back to the shop to work on the Rear bumper. All fancy tube work to aid in the attachment of recovery points and such. For the record, the engineers who designed the XJ apparently had the mentality of “When in dought, add another layer of metal, if all you need are welds, add bolt too, and every now and then, add glue, just for good measure”. We found no less then 3 layers of metal between the outer fender and the inner wall of the Cherokee. Most of this metal was welded on, but we encountered 2 bolts that appeared to hold nothing up, but where designed with laser like accuracy to get in our way. We even found two sheets that where further glued together for good measure! Anyways here is the partially finished cutting job. The rear here is going to be boxed in more and a Comanche (MJ) tailgate that was procured will be installed. Where still not sure if we will be able to make the tailgate open and close, or if we will just weld it in, but as long as it has the “J E E P” logo Mike's wife will be happy, which will keep him alive when she sees how much money he's spending. Bootyfab MS paint drawing of the "completed project.

Nice!
Those random bolts may have been for alignment. Bolt together assembly, then spot weld into once piece ...
You're going to need a little more cross bracing than that, though. Or a couple of extra longitudinal "torque tubes". Even with the super-solid floor in the Cherokees (for a unibody), they still count a fair amount on that roof for torsional stiffness. What you've got shown is really good. The main things you need to do is make certain you cross brace the top hoop all the way back to the brace over the rear axle, and gusset that tube you have over the dash down to the firewall at the corners. Unless you can tie into the firewall, you're likely to find that the cage is stiffer than the body, and the body will want to move around there within the cage.
Other than the vertical bars at the B pillars, are you cross bracing the cage near the center? Or will the main hoop have to rely mostly on the rear brace and the windshield brace for lateral support?

The B pillar will look something like this. All in all, there will be much more triangulation than that picture shows. That was just a rough draft. ;D

Yeah, I'm sure Karl would have shown us the 2-D or 3-D AutoCAD version if he had it handy I still can't get over how much you guys chopped that white XJ up. I'm thinking more along the lines of retro-fitting rear side glass myself, not so much a chop-top or something extreme like this project. An easier setup for the MJ tailgate would have incorporated leaving some of the rear quarter panels in and using the rails from an MJ bed, as well as at least part of the tail light areas for it to look "pretty". I can't wait to see the outcome, though... this oughtta be good! ;D
