Ok, Alex has beaten the snot out of his first single-seater Jeep for over a year now. I couldn't wait until his birthday (May 13th and it's just getting too nice out!) so I ponied up the dollars for the new Jeep Hurricane (ToysRUs).
Here's a few shots of it going together-
Test drive-
This hole was driven through cleanly with no help, to my suprise! The old Jeep obviously couldn't make it. With the Hurricane, he carried the tire over it then dropped the rear tire into it putting a front tire way in the air. After getting out and inspecting the "damage" he got back in and put it in "power gear" and before I could even try to help the thing flattened back out and pulled away. Wish I had video of that! The look on Alex's face was priceless.
I was a little worried at first when we were first testing it on the Log trail. The easy grade into the trail made the tires work like an open diff, even though it has two motors on each one. It seemed like they were stalling out. If you slowed one down by pushing down on that corner, it would transfer torque like a L/S diff. Forget that! I figured it out when he took off in high gear on the asphalt and the darn thing kinda got sideways, acting like the rear was locked up. The neighbors were digging it for sure! Anyway, the speed is controlled by a "gearshift" which reduces battery power to the motors in "low gear". This makes it go slow but the motors stall easily. No gear reduction here (duh) just less battery juice. We hit the trail again and this time when he lifted a tire and got stopped, he hit the "power gear" or high gear and the thing spun both tires and immediately pushed through. So now when he gets stuck he shifts to "high gear" and gets full juice to the motors. Once he clears the obstacle, back to low (slow speed). The thing will chuck some dirt. Hope it rains tonight so we can root it properly in the mud hole tomorrow! It's a Jeep thing, you guys understand....

These things are cool! It's got an ice chest storage compartment. Great for packing stuff for a Jeepin' picnic.
Oops!
Too bad the mud hole is dry!
It goes all over this hill...
Definitely worth the cash, now to wire up some lights for nights runs!!
