DENVER – What a way to wake up to the New Year. A family was awakened early Thursday morning when a car flew into their home.
The family has been forced out of their home and it could be some time before they will be able to move back in.
It happened near Federal Blvd. and I-70 at 4888 Elm Ct. around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.
The family of three along with a nephew who was spending the night was home when a Jeep crashed through the living room and landed in the house. No one was injured.
When it landed in the house, the driver put the Jeep in reverse and tried to back out. When that didn't work, he and the passenger ran in different directions.
The crash broke a water main and flooded the basement where some family members were sleeping.
Police tracked the license plate number to a nearby house and found the driver. He faces reckless driving charges.
Witnesses say the crash was unbelievable.
It was also hard for Andrew and Jeremy Sweeney to believe. Just hours earlier, they were hanging out in their aunt’s living room.
“It's really sad. Thank God no one was hurt.” Danny Quiz, brother of the homeowner said. "You can replace things, it's no big deal, but, it's just a really really scary situation.”
Even passers-by wanted to know, “how did the car get up high - how did it get so high in the house?”
Police have not offered an explanation for how the accident happened.
Tread marks start across the intersection from the house, continue through and up to the lawn to where the car launched into the home.
“We had to swerve away from that car so that it wouldn't hit us,” explained Kim Cisneros and Felisha Bettale who saw the crash. “And it was just flying through the air and just hit the house - you know - and it was just like, ‘wow’.”
