Permits will allow night driving on Hatteras beaches Posted to: News North Carolina The Virginian-Pilot © September 15, 2008 Night driving in Cape Hatteras National Seashore will be allowed starting Tuesday through Nov. 15 with an off-road vehicle permit. The free permit must be displayed in the windshield of the vehicle between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The permit is available online at www.nps.gov/caha, at park visitor centers, local tackle shops and realty offices. “With a record number of turtle nests on national seashore beaches this season,” said park superintendent Mike Murray, “we are closely watching the impacts of night driving on the seashore beaches.” Also Tuesday, beaches in front of villages in Avon, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Ocracoke will reopen to ORV traffic. Posted sea turtle protection areas are closed to vehicles, pedestrians and pets.
