Even though I haven't been actively looking for a new tow rig I think I found one and wanted to get some opinions and/or pro's and con's of it. Right now I'm looking at a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 with a 24V CTD, an extended cab, regular bed, and 4x4. I know about the potential transmission problems... but it seems more like a power problem then the transmissions themselves. Because the Cummins is so easy to crank up the power on people can very easily over tune the engine for the transmission. From what I've seen so far a stock transmission should not have many problems as long as the engine in stock. I've also read about the KDP (killer Dowel Pin) problem and the fixes. I took a look today and the block is not stamped with the crack prone 53 block so that shouldn't be an issue either. The one thing I'm curious about is the miles on the truck... it has about 190K on the odometer. Is this a deal for $8K or should I be looking else where? The truck seems solid over all no slush in the oil and the coolant reservoir looks clean. Any "educated" opinions? I'm not looking for Dodge sucks go Ford/Chevy.

As long as it has been well maintained, it sounds like a pretty good deal. I checked generic pricings on KBB, NADA, and Edmunds, and it is priced much lower than suggested retail. As long as you are aware of potential issues and plan to address them, you should be okay. That is the kind of truck I had originally looked for before deciding to buy my 'yota.... sometimes, I wished I had bought one Dave G P.S. Wouldn't matter to me which of the 'big three' it was, as long as it's in good shape and doesn't fall apart, I could care less. All three makes have their pros and cons.....

Dodge sucks, I'd get a Ford. Instigator!! But, my 2000 7.3 Ford has been doing well for the five years I've had it, only 118k on it. Interesting though, I was walking through the Chevy dealership about a week ago. A decked out new diesel for 41k. They were running employee pricing = about 10k off sticker price. Fran

I thought this might cause some hate and discontent... but that wasn't my goal... entirely I actually wanted a new Tundra to tow my toy with but I'm having a hard time swallowing $30K+ for a vehicle that only gets 13mpg city. I know the CTD will probably get about the same mpg city with a greater tow capacity for about 1/3 the cost. Paul G. P.S. Drips Oil Drops Grease Everywhere

With Toyota having a special TuRD edition, and fords well...
Fugger Only Runs Downhill
I'd say that if you go with the dodge, get a tranny cooler just as a CYA effort.

That's not a bad price. My dad owned a 97 dodge that rolled 400k miles and the body fell off of it before the drive train gave way. Needless to say I'd do it....specially if you could talk that price down alot more say around 7k.
Adam.
Oh by the way......this is not an educated opinion in any shape or form. Good luck.

Well the one I was looking at didn't pan through because I couldn't get ahold of the owner this week. But with continued searching I found a better one. I ended up finding a 01 Dodge Ram, Extended cab, short bed, SLT with a Cummins, 4x4, goose neck hitch, class V tow hitch, and a trailer brake. With only 123K miles for $9K. I just need to get it registered and inspected for for Virginia and I'll be running it. Just thought I would let you all know. I'll post pics up later tonight when I get off work. Paul G.
