Alright, been meaning to do this one for a while just never got around to it till today. If you really pick up on reading wiring stuff then this is really a 20 minute, 30 minute job tops. And man is it cool and well worth it! ;D
Background: From the factory the Rubicon Lockers only will operate in 4wd, Lo range. Additionally there is no provision for front only locker operation for those times you may want to pull yourself with the front locker engaged only...
Standard Disclaimer: By performing this modification you are defeating a factory installed safety device/interlock. I assume no responsibility for vehicle damage or injury. Do so at your own RISK!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, really it is a great mod, and doesn't cost a million bucks!
Tools/Materials required:
Flat screwdriver
Philips screwdriver
Wire strippers/connector crimper
1/2, 9/16 inch wrench
knife
Drill
15/32 drill bit or whatever size the switches you use are
Pictured below:
2 - SPST Military type switches
14 gauge wire red/black/purple/polka dot...doesn't really matter what color
Quick crimp connectors
Female blade crimp on connectors
**After doing this mod I felt 16 or 18 gauge wire is more than enough for this install**
First start by gently prying off the defrost vent panel by the windshield
Then remove the two pictured screws
Firmly but gently pull up and out on the center dash bezel and then set it aside
For those that have never gotten in to your TJ's dash, this is what it looks like...this is also the same way you would install an aftermarket head unit/stereo
Okay, remove these 4 screws pictured and this will give you access to the locker switch/harness. Disconnect the connectors because you will need to drill 2 holes for the bypass switches in the spot they used put the airbag shut-off switch.
Place just the switch cover on the square plastic area and mark where you want the center of the hole drilled, drill it, and then install the switch assembly. Repeat for the second switch.
Switches installed
Identify the ground wire (All Black, pin 1), rear locker engage(Violet/light green, pin 6), front locker engage (Violet/Dark Blue, Pin 7)
The additional wiring involved jumpers the 2 ground posts and then with a quick crimp to the harness ground. Use individual wires for the 2 other posts on the switches and 2 quick crimps to the respective front/rear locker wire.
Quick crimps on
This is the backs of the installed switches completely wired
Now connect everything back up and put the dash back together the same way it came apart
One thing I forgot to mention at the begining,Disconnect the pos battery cable, now that I've said that reconnect it and turn the start the Jeep. In the first set of pictures you see the tranfer case in 2WD! Rear locker engaged
Next, T-case is in 4Hi, both lockers engaged
That is all there is to it, now functions like two ARB air lockers do independently locking front only, rear only, 2wd, any speed, any transfer case position!
Hell yeah!!!!!! ;D
Later,
Will
