From Big Daddy, VA4WDA Land Use Coordinator...
"Official word!!! Stay out!!
This is the Harrisonburg watershed, since the 1950's the ordinace reads that there will be no activity in the watershed, what so ever, so stay out.
This watershed is and land on either side of route 33 from Rawley Springs to the Switzer Dam. STAY OUT.
More to come."

So what's left to run out that way if someone was to go right now? Correct me if I'm wrong -
Second Mountain gate is closed except during hunting season. Dictum Ridge is open for or closed? Dry River Run and the trail back to the dam is closed. Flag Pole is still open? Any other trails (other than the gravel fire routes)?

OK, so it'll still make a good weekend up there without the Dry River Run then. And from Kephart it isn't very far to Shoe Creek and Bald Mtn either. I'm glad I went there in Dec and got that last illegal trail ride in. We stayed on the main trail, but didn't realize that the main trail was even off limits.

I GPS'd the "main trail" that parallels Route 33 in the Dry River area in the hopes of being able to work with the city and marking the trail with blazes on the trees (like the AT) and keeping that open. We'll see.

That section of trail across Dry River was RIDICULOUS with mud holes. Rescued a blazer last year back in there. Glad its closed off....

Glad its closed off....But if it were a legal trail, you wouldn't wish it closed, right? Muddy trails can be fun, too! Yea I've done those trails (05, prolly alot less trails then than now) back there, before it was made known to be illegal. Me and a bunch of other folks that will remain nameless cuz we all know them. The old adage applies- if you're having fun up there, it's illegal. Let me guess- some college kids "in over their heads"? Dave

Locals out for a good time and made a wrong turn, no winch. There are mud holes then there are MUD HOLES, I think more of the trail was underwater than above. Oh then the SMELL

Muddy trails can be fun, too! Amen to that. Even though I've done my time in the mud, and tend to stay away, a little mud now and then can be fun. Can you say Starr Motors? I'll come out and watch you guys.

Somehow, I have a feeling this is where I got lost the time I went up for a 2nd Mt. cleanup. I saw some trails that looked more like rivers and streams than trails and saw a few vehicles vainly trying to bludgeon their way out. All these trails were on the opposite side of 33 from Kephart.
