Well, the 4WD system works fine on the XJ. Used it through both snow storms to get back and forth. For some reason though, the front shaft is squeaking. It's not completely obnoxious, but it's close.
I took off the drivers side wheel to take a close look at it and to make sure it wasn't the wheel.
Now, from my understanding that front D/S never stops spinning on an XJ? Is that right? The squeak never goes away now...and I'm not sure what could be causing it.
Ideas?

If your XJ is a 92 or up the front driveshaft always turns. My first guess would be a U joint. The easiest way I would say to narrow it down is to remove the front driveshaft and see if the sound goes away.

What you described is the Ujoints/Double Carden not having grease in the joints. When this happens- THIS is the result of too much friction! I had the same squeak when I used my Jeep as a ferry a few years ago. Check the joints and grease them up... if it's a factory double carden, it probably doesn't have grease zerks... might as well replace it, imo.

I've seen two different 'styles' of U-joints: One that uses a 'needle' fitting to re-grease and the other that has a zerk. Either way, I'd have to agree, you may want to check your U-joints on both front and rear driveshafts for lubrication. Might be worthwhile to replace them, as you may already have run them dry and have bad needle bearings in the caps. You can usually tell if there's excessive lateral and radial movement of the installed driveshaft (I think I said that right?).

Ah...ok. Well after having done the joints on the YJ....not a huge issue. When I looked at the front shaft u-joints, they looked to be still factory. I'll have to get a better glance, but for the fairly cheap cost of replacing them, it shouldn't' be too much of an issue to just replace them.
Hopefully that is the issue...

Ok....so taking advantage of the weekend weather, I worked the front d/s on Sunday.
Four straps on the axle side, and the four bolts on the t/c side, it was out fine.
Come to find out, there is a third u-joint (I just never knew) I've never seen this kind of d/s setup before. Turns out the rubber skirt inbetween the t/c side of the d/s was a little craked and rotted, but still together for the most part. Whatever that thing is called (like a horizontally positioned pivot bearing) was all junked up and was what was squeaking. Since I had two u-joints, I just went and got a third. Cleaned up the pivot assembly and repacked the whole thing with grease after making sure the needle bearings inside of the pivot thingy were straight. changed out the front u-joint for GP and threw it back in. No more squeaky...
Does that desing of d/s make it better or worse? Certainly it has to be a break-point, yes?

The 3rd u-joint is part of the Double Carden that Cory mentioned. I've never heard of them being a weak point, but I've never wheeled one hard. Ask Craig, Craig knows.

This XJ is definitely not a hard wheeler. Stock...I just beat it up a little during the last big snow and somehow managed to get the squeak. Noted on Craig's post. He was right. I just wasn't connecting the Double Carden nomenclature...I get it now.
What's odd, is that even though I asked for a u-joint with a zerk, they didn't give me any. That is besides the point anyways as the squeak was coming from the DC joint.

The squeak usually comes from the DC joint. More specifically the centering ball in the joint.
I've had the "angry sparrows" in that part many many times.

I just wasn't connecting the Double Carden nomenclature...I get it now. The bolded text highlights the crucial flaw in this setup. My TJ had since been drug through a few DEEP mudholes prior to a trip to UWE when Norm and several others heard my squeaking in the TJ. We initially suspected Hub/unit bearings had water in them, but I was much younger, and broker than a joke, so I drove it till I could get it home. ...Few days after the UWE trip, at 55mph, over a the "Godwin Bridge" on 17 near my house, the undercarriage BLEW UP. The Double Carden ended up seizing to the point where instead of breaking itself, it cracked my Tcase like an egg. The Double Carden itself is a stout little part. Unfortunately, stock, it has no way to be regreased. I took my driveshaft into Gregory's and they installed a new DC and repaired the shaft (as it had bent/warped from the tension) and the new DC had a zerk on it. The more I play with these newer XJs and TJs, the more I realize they HATE water... I'm having to replace the CPS in my TJ for a second time, thanks to the first snow/slush episode we had here in HR this past season.
