Hey Guys, My Friend just bought a 1995 Wrangler and the rear axle is messed up. It sounds like the Carrier has eaten some teeth. The question I have is Will a Dana 35 out of a 1997 TJ work under his jeep , I know they have different springs etc (I found a dana 35 for $50 is why I ask). If not is there anyone who would be interested in rebuilding the one he has for $ of course , Or helping out with the Process? I have never messed with axles other that to put on a lift kit so I am in new territory. Thanks

What is the jeep used for? What gear ratio is needed?
I ask because the Dana 35 is a POS that breaks all the time. If the jeep is used for anything other than daily commuting by some one who drives like a little old lady I'd recommend upgrading if at all possible. The TJ axle will require all the coil spring mounts and linkage mounts are removed and leaf spring perches are welded on to work w/ the YJ. This will require more time effort and/or $$ than should ever be thrown at the Dana 35. I'd only use a Dana 35 if it was cheep and didn't require any modifications.
There are other options for rear axle donors including XJ Dana 44s, XJ Chrysler 9.25", Isuzu Dana 44s, Ford 8.8" etc.

The 35 from the 97 could be made to work, a lot of cutting and grinding. Only thing I don't know is if the pinion is in the same location 97 compared to 95, Would have to measure. Keep looking around though, 35's pop up all the time for real cheap. Here is one for 100.00 with 4.10 gear set....93 wrangler, direct bolt in richmond.craigslist.org/pts/1793415400.html75.00 front and rear axles, 3.07 gear set from 88 wrangler.. fredericksburg.craigslist.org/pts/1814994920.htmlhth tim

Newt- The jeep will mainly be used to commute but he is planning on taking it on the beach some.
Tim - I sent an e-mail to both of those. I always forget to look outside of hampton roads on CL. Thanks.
I think he really just wants to get it on the road. He does not sound too interested in spending much on it right now. Thanks for the info I will let you know how it comes together.

How difficult is it to change from 4.10 gears to the stock 3.07 that are in the current axle? I am waiting to hear from the guy with the one with the 4.10 gear set.
The front and rear for $75 from fredricksburg were gone!

Personally I'd keep the 4.10s and swap out the front gears when time and money allow. If it is only for DD purposes, you could remove the front driveshaft for the time being.

I handed the few that were found off to my buddy so now I will just wait and see what he is going to do. On a side note I think I am going to have to learn how to do axles though.... I just called Pungo Offroad to see what a gear change would cost front and rear and he said about $1500 ! really....! That is silly. Thanks for the input.

Wow that is pricey,,, I can help you with the axle gear change if you want to install the 3.07 gears in the 4.10 axle. But before you do that, check the ring and pinion for damage in the existing axle to be sure that they are usable... I think that is the direction you are talking about.....
