This time I got about 2.5 years out of one. I spent a little extra and got one of those 4 cycle engine Troy Bilt trimmers from Lowes and it still didn't last me long. The head on this one cracked on me yesterday about halfway though. I admit I'm pretty hard on them and just hang it up when I'm done and don't do anything for service or to winterize. This one may have been flown halfway across the yard before out of frustration with the string line becoming tangled in the auto feed head because someone is challenged in the string winding department. But that probably won't happen again since it didn't help the string come out out and maybe helped the early demise. So what's a good one to get that will last more than 2-3 years but doesn't cost $350? Or do I just keep getting the cheap ones every few years since I probably won't take care of an expensive one anyway? I was looking at the Honda trimmers, they're over $300 but man they are nice and balanced and really quiet and smooth.

You must be hard of stuff! I'm working on 10yrs of use on my cheapy Ryobi. It's one of those that accepts different attachments, but I only use the trimmer and edger (with metal blade).

Maybe you should lend your Ryobi to Frommer.....
I too bought a FS 45 off ebay... havn't broken it in yet
Killed a walmart WEEDEATER after a few seasons, got my moneys worth.
Maybe its the head attachment your haven problems with, if your bangn it to feed out line, maybe switch to a blade....

Ouch Tommy, very ouch.
Well last year I finally found a good string head that is very easy to wind up so that hasn't been an issue since. Do those Stihl's have the two piece shaft to accept different attachments? I'd like to continue using the blower and string attachments that I already have. I'll check em out, thanks.

The 45 doesn't, but I believe Stihl makes some that do take attachments.

At least they last longer than your 4x4's Man, I felt that one all the way over here ;D Good luck on finding something that will handle the abuse, Keith. Pretty much everything my Uncle has used has been mentioned, and even with the amount of maintenance he does on his, they don't last very long. He has a Husqavarna hanging in the shop that I'd like to revive. I can't remember what's wrong with it. I think the one he has now is an Echo from either Lowe's or Wally World. Again, good luck....
