I am wanting to put a locker in my 92 F-150 4x4. It has teh 8.8 diff and stock gears. ( 3.73 Open I think) Looking at what there is out there I was stuck between the Eaton Posi-lok diff or the Auburn Gear ECTED unit. I would like to have the limited slip that the ECTED offers, but htought I would ask for opinions to see what one would be better. This is a daily driver, not to see to much off road now, but in the future hoping to take it out to Colorado and run Hermit pass again. ( A nasty rock filled trail, reached 12K' +, snow in July) Also wanting to upgrade teh auto-hubs to Warn premium Manuel hubs.
Opinions? Pointers.

On a daily driver I'd recommend the detroit truetrac. Works like a limited slip but no clutches. I've got one im going to install in my super doodie. But that's just me, I hate anything Auburn and I don't really like clutched diffs. If your 8.8 is LSD then you can just rebuild the clutch packs and remove some spacers and pack them tighter with an extra clutch in each side. That always worked pretty well.

I have a Detroit true track in the front of my cj and I am not happy with it it pulls ok in in mud dirt and sand but I don't think it locks up as tight as it should. It seems to have loosened up over time also I know its more of a limited slip but I expected more. I don't know what you plan on doing with the truck but I would look into a lock right I have a Friend that has beat the crap out off one with no problems

I had Detroit EZ's in my CJ. It had a warmed over 304 with 4.56's and 36'' Swampers. It would break everything else but the locker. If you 'wheel it hard at all, figure on some breakage. The front liked axles and hubs, the rear ate driveshafts and yokes. Let if slip a bit. Traction=breakage. On my next rig, open is the key with a tow strap for good measure.

One wheel can still turn faster than the other but you'll never get 1 wheel peel like can still happen on clutched LSD. For something that gets wheeled a lot id want more of a locker. I've got Aussie lockers front and back in the FJ and I hate the one in the back when Im on the street. But they do work well and are fairly stout.

This truck won't see much off road action for a while, I am slowly building it and the action it will see are mountian trails, no boulder climbing. I t will see more street time then anything for now. So Detriot Trutrac is a good unit. Is there something wrong with the ECTED diff, or just not the widely used yet?

If you're not going to hit the uber hardcore stuff, just really rocky trails (nothing bigger than your tires) I would just put a selectable locker in the back and call it a day. You will be suprised how easy it is with the rear pushing on both sides all the time. My XJ only had a rear locker and it did great, even in some gnarly stuff.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks for all the information and inputs. I think that I will go with a selectable locker and leave it at that. Thought of a locker in the front but $$ is tight so that will have to wait. Thanks again. Ken
