I'm looking at replacing the injectors on my 7.3 here in the next month or so.Has anyone changed them out and what kind of problems could I run into?
Thanks Tom

Tom, a quick run down on this:
Replace your glow plugs while you're in there.
Do the 50 cent mod while you are in there. This is taking a quarter, grinding a flat spot on the top of it to the top of Washington's head. Slip the quarter in the Under Valve Cover Harness. This will keep the harness from separating at the connection which is a common problem and will leave you stranding. It's cheaper doing this that buying the kit from Ford to fix.
You'll need long and short extensions, and a universal. The back right side valve cover bolts are PITA and you need to contort your hand to get to them.
Remove all the glow plugs. Change one injector at a time. Make sure you get the injector seated by hitting it with the palm of your hand. Don't use the hold down bolt to seat the injector.
Torque the injector hold down bolts to 10 ft/lbs. Now is a good idea to retorque the rocker arm bolts to 20 ft/lbs.
Loosely place the valve covers on. Don't plug in the IDM connector over on the driver's side valve cover. Spin the motor over a few times. You can do it by hand or by the starter. I use the starter. This shoots all the oil and diesel out of the cylinder through the GP hole so you don't hydrolock later. It's an important step because when you remove the injector fuel and oil will fill the cylinder.
Remove valve covers, install new glow plugs (Use only Motorcraft, never Autolite!) and put it back together. It will take a while to restart. Crank it for 30 sec, wait a few minutes, and repeat until it starts. You will burn the starter up if you don't let it rest. It will run rough for about 50 miles until the air is out of the oil lines. Take it out and hammer on it.
Change the oil....

I guess there is no way to de-pressurize the fuel system and vacate the fuel from the engine fuel lines? Yes, the injectors for the IH/Navistar/Ford diesel, the Isuzu/GM/Duramax, and the CTD aren't cheap! I have a project to replace all 8 injectors on a Duramax as soon as we get parts and stuff in...

Dave it has nothing to do with pressure; they aren't under pressure when the engine is off. It's a HEUI system (state of the art in its day) so naturally the oil and fuel ports will be full. If you don't want to shoot it all out the glow plug holes, then you can take the time to suck it out with a turkey baster, but that sucks and is time consuming. Hey Tom, it's just about the same price for some Stage 1 sticks as it is for OE ones. I put the Stage 1's in mine and it woke that pig up. Check out www.dp-tuner.com

these things are expensive. In addition to my OCD, and other issues with wanting to play with a lot of different toys, this played a big part in me getting rid of my oil burner for a gasser.

Josh, one day you will come to realize that rolling smoke out of a pair of stacks does not necessarily equate to increased power. Ever stop to think that playing with injector timing has a negative effect on engine life?

Check out www.dp-tuner.comThanks for the input Kieth.I'm looking at stage 1 or 2.My thing is looking to gain power for towing and a couple added miles per gal.. I'm not into all the black smoke, trying to keep it well balanced. Josh thanks for the offer, I like doing things like this on my own until I need help. Tom
