Hey all, Been a while. Enterprise deployment, getting ready to move to Japan, tons of fun. Changing the shocks out on my daughters 1999 XJ. The upper mounting bolts for the right rear ( and I''m sure the left will get broken too) ..that go through the lower body are broken basically flush with the sheet metal. I thought those holes were not threaded and I could punch them out but I think the nuts on the inner/upper side are tack welded...as well as the holes being threaded.
I do not know what to do. Tried to get a drill bit on them, no luck. Air hammer?
Yikes....smh.

Not sure what an XJ looks like in that area, but I had to do this on a TJ once. Ended up using a hole saw on the floorboard above the area for access. I used a dremel because it was small, and an air chisel to remove the welded nuts the rest of the way. Then used some paint around the edges of the hole I made and plugged them with plugs from Lowe's. It was either that, or remove the gas tank for access to the welded nuts.

The ones I've had to do I drilled out and then re-tapped to clean up threads.

I had the same thing happen. I ended up doing the same as Fromme. XJs are notorious for the rear shock bolts breaking off.

I didn't have the time or tools to get them drilled out. Kempsville auto care center took care of it. Drilled em out and cleaned up, replaced the shocks for relatively cheap.
