For those looking to convert your tired old Gas motors to a nice soot-spewing diesel with lots of torque (OK, it's a VW TDI, but you get the picture), looks like you only need about $16k www.hpamotorsport.com/tdiconversions.htm

Ouch! I wonder how long it would take to get a return on investment in fuel savings...

Doesn't matter. It would be worth that cost so you could mount one of these on the exhaust coming through the hood...

VW actually has this site: thinkblue.vw.com/savings-calculator/So, according to that, your annual fuel cost savings would be $1,626. This is also based off getting a combined 34 mpg with the Jetta. If you had it in a Wrangler, your mileage wouldn't be that good. So figure probably 10-15 years for a return on investment. I'm with Chris though, it would be pretty sweet to have a smokestack with a flapper sticking out of the hood

That $16k includes $5700 for the install so this would be cheaper for those who plan to do the work themselves. I think this would be a great option for people who are replacing worn out motors. If you are planning an engine swap anyway, then the gas savings only needs to make up the difference between the 2 engines. My brother has 190,000 miles on his 4 cylinder YJ and would probably be interested in something like this. That poor little engine has never liked pushing his 33s, even after the regear. I'll probably be keeping an eye on it also with all the problems people seem to be having with the 05-06 Wrangler 4.0L. That stupid OPDA seems to be giving way to many people issues and I am not sure that any kind of preventative maintenance will keep it from destroying the engine.
