Hey I have a question? My dad has a 2002 ram 1500 with the factory hitch and he needs to tow a 16' enclosed trailer the trailer is rated up to 7500lbs. should we get a weight distribution hitch for his truck? It tows fine empty, but I am worried about it when it is full of tools and stuff.

Depends on how he's going to load it. If it's going to have a heavy tongue weight normally then he might want one. He can always load it and see how it tows, then deside. Having one will never hurt. I've never used one and use to tow at my Chevy tahoes max trailer weight.

I'm gong to say, he'll either need a WDH or some helper springs or air bags on the truck. Even if he doesn't *need* it, having one of those really helps the stability at highway speed. 7500 pounds is a lot for a half ton.

Thanks, I think we will probably get one jut in case. The trailer is going to be a disater relief trailer for my church, so hopefully we will not need to use it much but when we do it will probably be on long trips so better safe than sorry I guess.

If you're going with the WDH, get one that incorporates the anti-sway bar. It can very helpful since by your use description you're going to have various weight and load levels. I assume you've also incorporated an electric brake control into your truck. There is no way to safely tow that type of trailer without one. Fran B.

I didn't use one with my half ton, but placement of the Jeep was critical. With the additional weight of the enclosed trailer, I would try it and then buy all the goodies Fran mentioned.
